Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a
Research Assistant with the Centre for Chromosome Biology at the National University of Ireland,
Galway. This position is funded by the National CFIDS Foundation and is available from 20th
January 2014 to contract end date of 19th March 2015.
The project will be carried out in Prof. Ciaran Morrison’s lab in the Centre for Chromosome Biology

Job Description:
The successful candidate will use reverse genetic approaches in tissue culture cells to analyse in
detail the interactions between Mcph1 microcephalin and Chk1 in the DNA damage response.
This will involve cloning of gene targeting vectors, cell culture, phenotypic analysis of mutant cells
(microscopy, flow cytometry, immunoprecipitation, immunoblot). The candidate will also contribute
to laboratory management (archiving, ordering etc.) and to student project supervision.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have a track record in a research and development environment and
strong molecular biology experience is essential. Applicants must be highly motivated and possess
a B.Sc/M.Sc. in molecular/cell biology or equivalent. The ideal candidate would have experience in:
molecular biology, particularly in cloning, with additional desirable experience being in recombinant
protein expression and purification; mammalian tissue culture; immunoblotting; fluorescence
microscopy. Lab management or equivalent experience is also desirable and candidates must be
computer literate.
Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated
and passionate about biomedical research; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal
skills.
Salary: €30,200 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)
