Text: Linear Algebra and Its Applications, 3rd ed., by: David C. Lay
Dr. Lay’s site: http://www.laylinalgebra.com
Course Content: MA 322 is designed to prepare students for higher level mathematics
that is commonly found in the hard sciences and engineering. Matrix algebra was
developed in the attempt to solve simultaneous linear equations in multiple variables. We
will cover methods concerning common matrix manipulation, dimension, Gaussian
elimination, vector spaces, basis, linear transformations, determinants, Eigenvectors and
Eigenvalues, diagonalization, inner products and orthogonality.
Attendance: Although attendance is not required, it is important to come to every class.
The only way to learn mathematics is through constant work and attendance is a simple
way to make sure you’re thinking mathematically for five hours a week. Although not
sufficient, these five hours are a solid base as you do not have to rely solely on the text.
Reading Text: Students are expected to read sections in the text as they are covered in
class. Ideally students will critically read the material both before and after it is covered
in lecture.
Homework & Quizzes: Homework will be assigned twice a week. Although not
collected and graded, you will be allowed to use your handwritten, homework
assignments as aids during semi-weekly quizzes.
Exams and Grades: All exams will be closed book and closed notebook unless
otherwise specified. Makeup exams and quizzes will only be administered in the
presence of a university excused absence. If you know you are going to miss an exam for
a university excused reason, you must let me know a week prior to the test. This way we
can set up a make up exam date that is both fair and reasonable. The final exam will be
comprehensive and must be taken at the designated time by the university. Here are the
dates of the exams and the percentage of your final grade each is worth.
 Quizzes: One or two a week - 30%
 Exam 1: All covered sections of chapters 1 – 3, July 7, 30%
 Final Exam: Comprehensive, August 3 - 40%
