The course will prepare students for the workplace or for educational programs after high school that do not require a mathematics prerequisite. Evaluation: For each chapter covered during this course, you will have several chapter activities and a unit exam. Chapter activities will include assignments, quizzes, journals, numbers skills and an assessment log. Extra Help: Extra help is always available with me and/or during lunch periods (Monday to Thursday) in the Math Workroom (Room 237). There are always math teachers on duty in room 237 at lunch to answer your questions. Down11© Assessment: Chapter Activities Include: Assignments: Time will be given in class to work on assignments then finished at home if needed. When work is not passed in, extra help sessions will be assigned. Quizzes: Individual quizzes provide you with opportunities to assess your on-going progress and determine if extra help is needed. Journals: The entries will consist of questions similar to those completed during each unit, writing about mathematics, and a self-evaluation of how you have been working towards the course outcomes. Assessment Log: The assessment log is a collection of your work by unit in this course arranged in order in a duo tang. You are permitted to use your assessment log on the Unit Exam. Self Evaluations You will score yourself on attendance, effort, behavior, engagement, and organization. Unit Exams: Students will be permitted to use their portfolio as a reference during the unit exams. There will be a total of four unit exams during this course. What Students can expect from Mr. Down: Students can expect at least two days notice for all quizzes, and at least one week’s notice for Chapter Tests. When a student does not write a scheduled test, a mark of “zero” will be recorded unless prior arrangements have been made, and an acceptable excuse has been provided. Make-up tests and quizzes will be considered on an individual basis, depending on the circumstances. Students can expect time extensions to complete their assignments and journals without penalty if they regularly attend class and try their best. Students can expect to meet individually with Mr. Down to review their marks and progress at the end of each Chapter. What Parents/Guardians can expect from Mr. Down: Parents can expect the school messenger system to call home each night to notify them in the event that their child was absent for class. Parents who provide their email contact information can expect to be contacted via email to communicate their child’s success or concerns with their individual progress.
