Job Purpose
To assist the multi-disciplinary operating team to provide exemplary care by offering a timely portering
service. The service will include escorting patients between ward, departments and theatre suite;
Transporting equipment, medical records, meals, specimens and linen; Moving furniture.

Specific Responsibilities
1.
Routine tasks related to patient’s health and well being
 Correctly undertakes tasks* that have been delegated in relation to specific patients as agreed
with the care team.
 Prepare patient, self, equipment and materials appropriately for the tasks* to be undertaken
 Obtain consent from patients before starting the tasks*
 Tasks can include moving and handling, ensuring patient comfort and safety at all times.
 Moving patient from bed to trolley; trolley to operating table; operating table to trolley; trolley to
bed.
 Support patients throughout the task encouraging them to promote their own health and well
being when possible.
 Identify and report to an appropriate person any significant changes that might affect the
patient’s health and well being during escort duties and moving/handling.
 Respect patients’ privacy, dignity, wishes and beliefs and minimise any necessary discomfort
 Record information related to designated tasks* and activities* accurately and passes it on to
the relevant person in the team on time.
 Undertake activities* as delegated and taught to ensure appropriate assistance to the theatre
team.

- liase with theatre team regarding the organisation of theatre lists
- escort non ‘premedded’ patients from the ward to theatre
- provide patient support within the anaesthetic room
- escort non anaesthetised patient from theatre to the ward
- ensure moving and handling equipment is clean and in safe working order
- Transport safely and timely’ specimens from theatre to the designated area, recording
legibly and accurately necessary details
- Transport equipment as delegated by the theatre team

 Agrees with theatre team the data and information that is to be collected and collated.
 Undertake data collection and collation activities effectively and to time using the agreed
systems.
 Communicate appropriately with all those involved in the care of the patient, reporting
problems to the appropriate person immediately.
 Report the data and information clearly in the agreed format to time.

Contribute to own personal development
 Complete the requirements of Spire Healthcare’s induction programme, with the help of more
senior colleagues.
 Assess and identify current knowledge and skills to the demand of the job, with the help of
others.
 Prepare for and actively take part in Spire Healthcare’s enabling excellence programme.
 Take an active part in a variety of learning activities and keep a record of them, seek help
when unsure.
 Attend the annual mandatory training programme.
4.
Maintaining own and others’ health and safety and security
 Undertake work activities and related training as defined in Spire Healthcare health and safety
policies and procedures.
 Assist in maintaining a safe working environment for self, colleagues, patients and others.
 Ensures theatre colleagues know own location during working hours.
 Summons immediate help for any emergency and take appropriate action to contain it, within
the limits of your own personal safety.
 Report any issues in the workplace that may put health and safety at risk, supporting others in
maintaining health, safety and security.
 Assist in maintaining a safe work environment by the correct disposal of waste and spillage.

 Prepare all theatre equipment, materials and self appropriately for the task to be undertaken.
 Maintain, handle and store theatre equipment and materials effectively and safely.
 Recognise the meaning of quality procedures and consistently work within the parameters of
Spire Healthcare principles, policies and procedures.
 Make suggestions on how quality in own area of work can be improved.
 Monitor basic stock levels obtaining more resources when needed.

 Make the necessary security checks prior to receiving resources or allowing people to enter the
theatre suite.
 Check equipment against orders, correctly identify errors and take the appropriate action in
response.
 Control and store resources according to the manufacture’s recommendations and user
requirements.

Environment
The post requires exertion of intense physical skills for short periods during the provision of personal

skills which are normally obtained through practice over a period of time.
