WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Positive Behavior Supports and Visual Strategies in the School: Creating a Motivating
Classroom – 8:30 – 10:30
Ellen Thalhamer III, Mary Lou Bastiao, Lenny
Caltabiano
Establishing a motivating classroom setting is
critical to the success of students, especially for
those with special needs. This presentation looks
beyond the basic strategies and interventions, and
focuses on combining the principles of behavior
management with visual support strategies.
Promoting task-completion, general compliance,
coping skills, and social skills will all be
emphasized as part of this presentation. The role
of para-educators (teacher assistants, teacher
aides, etc.) in carrying out these strategies
throughout the school environment will also be
emphasized. In order to maximize generalization
of behavioral improvements, teachers should also
educate parents in how to carry over such
strategies in the home setting. Accordingly,
home-school collaboration will also be addressed
as part of this presentation.
Conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments in the School Setting: A Step-By-Step
Guide to Conducting Classroom-Based FBAs
10:45 – 12:45
Daniel Gatto & Lenny Caltabiano
Research has repeatedly demonstrated the
importance of identifying key functions of
problem behavior in order to develop an effective
behavior management plan. This presentation will
cover the history of FBAs, and provide a step-bystep procedure for conducting FBAs in the
classroom setting. Those who attend this
workshop will learn about the core components
of an FBA, and strategies used to determine what
the true function of a target behavior is. This
workshop will provide a detailed description of
the indirect, descriptive, and functional analysis
component of an FBA. Particular emphasis will
be placed on how to address some of the common
obstacles that may exist in school settings that
can potentially impact the outcome of a FBA.
Data Collection Procedures for the Classroom
Setting: Meaningful Behavioral Measurement
of Student Successes – 1:45 – 3:45
Lenny Caltabiano & Jaime Gettinger-Webber
Behavior tracking and progress monitoring are
critical to maintaining an effective behavior
intervention plan and making appropriate
decisions for students with behavioral needs.
Teachers and para-educators can become
overwhelmed in identifying and conducting
behavioral measurements within the context of
the busy classroom setting. This presentation
reviews various behavior data collection
procedures that can be conducted within the
school/class setting. Emphasis will be placed on
determining the best data collection procedures
based on the nature of the presenting behavior
and the common obstacles that can occur within
the classroom setting. Computer-based tracking
applications and electronic graphing will also be
reviewed.
