Scenario
You are the training officer in a machining company and you are required to produce an information booklet as a reference guide for the
apprentices which describes the function of a range secondary machining processes, the booklet should include information on different work
holding devices, tooling, and setting of parameters for each machine to ensure accuracy and safety when manufacturing a range of
components.
Assignment title
Assignment 2 Investigating Secondary Processing Machines
Task 1
Produce an information booklet for four different secondary machining processes (three traditional and one
specialist from the list below) which contains the following information:
A) A basic description of the operating principles of each machine, for example how work piece and
tools are located in machine, how different shapes/features are produced including description of
two tools for each machine, e.g. parallel surfaces, tapers, radii, holes etc. The correct terminology
needs to be used in each case, for example head stock, cross slide, Spindle, quill etc.
B) A description of two different work holding devices for each machine, e.g. chuck, vice etc., this
should include how work is restrained, for example friction/positive restraint and examples of what
types/shapes of work each would be used to hold.
C) A description of four different tools which could be used on each of the chosen machines, this
should cover areas such as type of form produced amount of material which can be used and typical
applications for each.
D) The different parameters that need to be set to ensure component is machined to satisfactory finish
and tolerance for example spindle speed, depth of cut etc.
Traditional machining processes
Turning (centre lathe, capstan, turret, single speed automatic)
Milling (vertical, horizontal, universal)
Drilling (Single spindle, multi spindle)
Grinding (surface, cylindrical, centreless)
Specialist Machining Processes
Boring (horizontal, vertical)
Elector-discharge (spark erosion, wire erosion)
Honing and lapping (horizontal/vertical honing, rotary disc lapping)
P1, P2, P3
Task 2
Explain in detail the effects of using an inappropriate work holding device when setting up a secondary
processing machine, this should include factors such as safety of operator, damage to components, tools
and machine, accuracy and finish of work piece, production time etc.
M1
Task 3
Explain in detail why it is important to set machine parameters correctly to produce accurate features on a
component produced by a secondary processing machine this should include factors such as speed
selection, feed rate, depth of cut, position of tool, effects on tools etc.
M2
Task 4
The drawing below shows a chuck key spindle which requires four flats to be machined on one end and a
hole drilled and countersunk using a milling machine, 500 components are required. You are required to
select a suitable work holding device for this operation and justify your selection by comparing it to other
devices in terms of safety, ease of use, accuracy and efficiency.
