Interpreting verbal and written communication as required by staff and patients ACCOUNTABLE TO: Head Nurse JOB DESCRIPTION: 1.0 JOB SUMMARY: The Health Educator/Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering preventive health care and health education advice according to requirement of physician/health visitor to patients and their families within an outpatients setting. They are also responsible for translating verbal and written forms of communication from Arabic to English and vice versa as required by staff and patients. 2.0 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 2.1 Clinical: 2.1.1 Assists doctors and health visitor in public health nursing programmes in clinics and schools ensuring that the standards of nursing care and procedures performed within the unit are of high quality. Reports to the Head Nurse/Health Visitor in-charge if standards fall below the accepted level. 2.1.2 Provides health education on one to one basis in the clinics and one to one basis and group health education sessions in the Post Partum Ward. 2.1.3 Assesses the specific health education and care needs of the clients and provides health education, advises and care according to the needs of the client. 2.1.4 Gives support to the families and talks with parents about any matters of concern that may arise. 2.1.5 Carries out full assessments on all patients prior to vaccinations. 2.1.6 Assesses developmental milestones. No: Date of Issue: Issue: Page: NUR/MGMT/J 009 03/03/2012 4 2 of 4 Health Educator/Registered Nurse JOB DESCRIPTION: (Cont’d.) 2.1.7 Assesses patients for any paediatric problems which may arise during early childhood and refers them to an appointment specialist. 2.1.8 Seeks advice from the Health Visitor or the Head Nurse in the situation when a child has a condition which deviates from normal. 2.1.9 Ensures vaccines are stored and transported in an appropriate way. 2.1.10 Participates in mass immunization programmes when required. 2.1.11 Works without an interpreter/clerk if required. 2.2 3.0 Health Education: 2.1.1 Delivers health education advice to individuals and their families as required by the physician/health visitor. 2.1.2 Delivers health education advice to groups of patients as requested by physician/health visitor. 2.1.3 Prepares displays under the direction of physician/health visitor in Preventive Medicine offering advice on healthy lifestyle, in compliance with local culture and beliefs. 2.1.4 Prepares and gives Leaflets to patients and families in both Arabic and English on all aspects of Health Education. 2.1.5 Prepares questionnaires in Arabic regarding patient/family satisfaction. 2.1.6 Collates patient’s questionnaires and analyses on findings appropriately for action by physician/head visitor. MANAGERIAL: 3.1 Establishes and develops effective communication with all disciplines of staff, patients and relatives. 3.2 Promptly reports complaints and incidents in accordance with hospital policy. EDUCATIONAL: 4.1 Attends mandatory lectures i.e. Fire and Safety according to hospital policy. 4.2 Participates in Professional Development programmes as necessary. HOURS OF WORK: 48 hours weekly. 6.0 REQUIREMENTS: 6.1 6.2 Qualifications and Relevant Experience: 6.1.1 RGN with appropriate registration in country of origin. 6.1.2 Post graduate qualification or experience in Health Education would be desirable. 6.1.3 Fluent in English. Personal Qualities: 6.2.1 Must be able to work under pressure and handle stressful situations diligently. 6.2.2 Pleasant with patient and public, avoid argument. 6.2.3 Must be of high ethical merits, safeguard confidentiality.
