JOB DESCRIPTION:

JOB SUMMARY:
This is a generic Job Description. Positions in different clinical specialities will bring
different responsibilities that will be discussed with the individual on allocation to the
clinical area and will be within the framework of this job description and the scope of
ability and practice.
This position is responsible for rendering professional nursing care to patients within
an assigned unit of the hospital. Such nursing care is an integral part of the total patient
care plan, working in conjunction with the medical staff and according to the policies
and procedures of the hospital. This will be in keeping with the accepted principles of
professional nursing practice.
1.1 Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates individual patient care.
1.1.1
Can identify the normal vital signs of a newborn, neonate, infant, toddler,
pre-schooler and school age child; can perform a pediatric physical
assessment and can identify signs and symptoms of distress.
1.1.2
Can competently manage common Pediatric conditions.
1.1.3
Can describe and recognize the social/behavioral/developmental
milestones of a newborn, neonate, infant toddler, preschooler and schoolage child.

Can demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the psychological needs
of the newborn, neonate, infant toddler, preschooler and school-age child
and their family.
1.2 Supervises junior and new staff and participates in orientation and development
programmes.
1.3 Takes charge of the unit in the absence of the person responsible as required or
requested.
1.4 Undertakes the role of the primary care provider specific to a defined patient group.
1.4.1
Demonstrates knowledge and competence in the calculation of fluids and
feeds for pediatric patients.
1.5 Participates in the on-going training and development programme of the
department/unit.
1.6 Takes responsibility for his/her own professional conduct and growth.
1.7 Acts in accordance with all agreed Hospital and departmental policies and
procedures at all times.
1.8 Behaves in a professional manner at all times.
1.9 Protects patients’ confidentiality in accordance with the hospital policy.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
2.1 Performs a variety of supportive and technical nursing skills and utilizes a range of
equipment, supplies, medication and other modalities in carrying out specific
medical orders for administration of medications and performance of specific
treatments, monitoring techniques and other diagnostic, therapeutic and supportive
measures. Uses equipment in a safe and effective manner.

2.2 Supports and assists the Head Nurse in establishing a good working environment in
which patients receive a high standard of care.
2.3 Takes responsibility for the direct delivery of professional and competent patient
care by promoting quality care standards.
2.4 Acts on behalf or at the direction of the Head Nurse/Charge Nurse in setting and
monitoring standards for patient care.
2.5 Participates in the monitoring of the planning, delivery of care and evaluation of the
individualized patient care.
2.6 Informs the Head Nurse/Charge Nurse of any changes in circumstances which
affect the standards of care.
2.7 Establishes and develops effective communications nursing, support services
patients and relatives.
2.8 Maintains safety and well-being of patients and staff in accordance with hospital
policies and procedures.
2.9 Provides a safe, therapeutic, personalized physical and psychological environment
for patient care.
2.10 Assists in the formation of nursing care standards/policies and supports the Head
Nurse and unit staff in its implementation.
2.11 Uses equipment and supplies in a cost effective and responsible manner and
participates in the procedure for ordering supplies within the agreed budget as
delegated.
2.12 Ensures that Infection Control practices are adhered to in accordance with
approved Infection Control policies.

2.13 Ensures that students and temporary staff allocated to the ward have appropriate
orientation, teaching and support in accordance with their curricular objectives and
reports any matter of concern to the Head Nurse/Charge Nurse.
2.14 Participates in the care, custody and administration of Medicines in accordance
with the hospital policy.
2.14.1 Demonstrates knowledge and competence in the calculation of drugs
according to weight.
2.15 Documents and reports all accidents/incidents to Head Nurse/Charge Nurse and
Site Manager.
2.16 Ensures that all nursing documentation is completed accurately and legibly and
understands the importance and relevance of their confidential nature.
2.17 Assist in data collection for monitoring and statistical purposes.
2.18 Participates in staff orientation and on-going developmental programmes.
2.19 Is responsible for own professional development and growth and remains updated
in current professional practices.
2.20 Is responsible for keeping updated in Infection Control, Lifting and Handling, Fire
and Safety and Disaster on a yearly basis.
2.21 Is responsible for keeping Drug Calculation certification 2 yearly.
2.22 Is responsible for keeping CPR certification 2 yearly and updated on a 2 yearly
basis. (Saudi Heart Council Recommendation).
2.23 Demonstrates knowledge of the hospital quality programme.

2.24 Takes an evidence-based approach to the assessment, planning , implementation
and evaluation of patient care.

2.26 Leads quality improvement and facilitates change where appropriate.
2.27 Collaborates with interdisciplinary health team members in establishing the plan
of care for selected patient population.
2.28 Assists with the resolution of problems on a shift-to-shift basis, with appropriate
documentation and follow-up reports to the Head Nurse.
2.29 Demonstrates high standards of clinical knowledge and practices.
2.30 Assumes accountability for quality care delivered to patients.
2.31 Maintains confidentiality of patient’s illness and care.
2.32 Demonstrates leadership and management skills when acting in the Charge Nurse
position.
2.33 Participates in TQM Activities
2.34 Carries out other duties appropriate to the role and the individual at the request of
the Head Nurse/Charge Nurse.
3.0
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
3.1 Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Nursing Diploma of three years programme.
3.2 Valid license to practice from the country of origin.
3.3 Must have Saudi Council Registration.
3.4 Post-basic certificate in area of responsibility is preferred.
3.5 BCLS Certified.
3.6 Posses other certification pertinent to area of expertise, i.e. NALS, PALS, ACLS,
ATLAS where applicable.
