JOB DESCRIPTION: 1.0 JOB SUMMARY: This is a generic Job Description. Positions in different clinical specialities will bring different responsibilities that will be discussed with the individual on allocation to the clinical area and will be within the framework of this job description and the scope of ability and practice. This position is responsible for rendering professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital. Such nursing care is an integral part of the total patient care plan, working in conjunction with the medical staff and according to the policies and procedures of the hospital. This will be in keeping with the accepted principles of professional nursing practice. 1.1 Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates individual patient care. 1.1.1 Can identify the normal vital signs of a newborn, neonate, infant, toddler, pre-schooler and school age child; can perform a pediatric physical assessment and can identify signs and symptoms of distress. 1.1.2 Can competently manage common Pediatric conditions. 1.1.3 Can describe and recognize the social/behavioral/developmental milestones of a newborn, neonate, infant toddler, preschooler and schoolage child. No: Date of Issue: Issue No.: Page: NUR/MGMT/J 014 03/03/2012 2 4 of 7 R G N- 1 – Paediatric Ward JOB DESCRIPTION: (Cont’d.) 2.13 Ensures that students and temporary staff allocated to the ward have appropriate orientation, teaching and support in accordance with their curricular objectives and reports any matter of concern to the Head Nurse/Charge Nurse. 2.14 Participates in the care, custody and administration of Medicines in accordance with the hospital policy. 2.14.1 Demonstrates knowledge and competence in the calculation of drugs according to weight. 2.15 Documents and reports all accidents/incidents to Head Nurse/Charge Nurse and Site Manager. 2.16 Ensures that all nursing documentation is completed accurately and legibly and understands the importance and relevance of their confidential nature. 2.17 Assist in data collection for monitoring and statistical purposes. 2.18 Participates in staff orientation and on-going developmental programmes. 2.19 Is responsible for own professional development and growth and remains updated in current professional practices. 2.20 Is responsible for keeping updated in Infection Control, Lifting and Handling, Fire and Safety and Disaster on a yearly basis. 2.21 Is responsible for keeping Drug Calculation certification 2 yearly. 2.22 Is responsible for keeping CPR certification 2 yearly and updated on a 2 yearly basis.
