JOB DESCRIPTION:

JOB SUMMARY:
Interpret and translate assigned verbal conversations, meetings and medical documents from
Arabic to English and vice versa, observing appropriate interpretation/translation techniques.
Carries out clerical duties within the hospital unit.
2.0
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
2.1
Performs verbal impromptu translation from Arabic to English and vice versa between
patient and medical staff/nursing staff.
2.2
Endeavours to reproduce the precise contextual meaning of the source language writer,
taking into consideration the basic syntactic and semantic constraints of the target
language, attempting to produce the same effect on the target language listener as
produced by speaker without adding any personal comments or opinions on the medical
condition of the patient.
2.3
Selects the appropriate method of interpreting and translating any given conversation.
2.4
Performs any clerical task that may be required within the department.
2.5
Assist in the comforting of the patients and extend assistance to them if possible.
2.6
Safeguards ethical code of the interpreting profession, ensuring patient confidentiality
during and after working hours.
2.7
Carry out all duties/tasks assigned by his/her manager/delegated manager within the
realm of his/her knowledge and ability.
2.8
Provides interpretation cover across the different Departments/Wards as required.

Interpreter
HOURS OF WORK:
48 hours weekly
Shift schedule according to Roster which will be available on monthly basis and can be subject
for amendment with or without short notice according to Heads of Department.

REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications or Relevant Experience:
BS Degree in English Literature, Translation or English Diploma with Hospital
Experience.

Must be able to work under pressure and handle stressful situation diligently.
Pleasant with patient and public, avoid arguments.
Must be of high ethical merits, safeguard confidentiality.
Experience:
Two to three years experience as an Interpreter or Translator in a public setting or after
passing 90 days hospital probationary period.
5.0
TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
As laid down by the Hospital Programme and subject for amendment. Remuneration will be
commensurate with the category indicated above.
