Reports to the Nurse Manager 3. Nursing Director JOB DESCRIPTION: 1.0 JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Head Nurse is responsible for assisting the Head Nurse in managing the ward/unit. Directing, supervising and administering nursing activities to deliver high standard of patient care. In the absence of the Head Nurse, the Assistant Head Nurse will assume overall accountability and responsibility for the ward/unit. 2.0 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 2.1 Managerial: 2.1.1 Ensure that equipment and materials within the area are used correctly, economically and effectively. Regularly checks stock for suitable levels and efficacy. Ensures equipment is used, maintained and serviced appropriate to patient needs. 2.1.2 Promptly reports to Head Nurse/Nurse Manager and assist in investigating complaints and incidents in relation to patient care in accordance with Hospital Policy. 2.1.3 Collaborates with medical staff and all other health care professionals on matters of patient care and any activity that could affect the delivery of that care. 2.1.4 Takes immediate action on identified hazards or potential hazards and ensures all staff are aware of steps taken. Advices on action taken to Head Nurse/Nurse Manager. 2.1.5 Checks stocks and recording of Narcotic and Controlled Drugs as laid down in the appropriate procedure (NUR/PRAC 003). Immediately reports to the Head Nurse/Nurse Manager and assist in investigating any incident of drug misuse or discrepancies. Also acts down if the need arises. 2.1.8 Exercises and demonstrates effective leadership and management skills. 2.1.9 Establishes and develops effective communication with other members of the health care team, patient and relatives. 2.1.10 Ensures that all staff are oriented into their roles and are fully aware of their range of duties and responsibilities within the scope of practice and laid down in the General Nurse Practice PPG’s. 2.1.11 Assists in the organization and mentoring of new staff. 2.1.12 Operates appropriately and correctly the agreed Policies and Procedures in relation to the Disciplinary and Grievance Procedure. 2.1.13 Ensures that staff within the area wears uniform correctly and according to the Uniform Policy PPG NUR/PRAC 014 and maintains a satisfactory standard of personal appearance. 2.1.14 In conjunction with the Head Nurse ensures that all staff have 90 day and annual IPR (Individual Performance Review) at a minimum. Ensures that staff have their IDP (Individual Development Plan) in place and that the same is reviewed regularly where appropriate. 2.1.15 Participate in the monthly Hospital Senior Nurse cover roster. 2.2 Clinical: 2.2.1 Plans and participates in the nursing care for the patients and ensures that the standard of nursing care and the procedures performed within the unit are of a high quality. Reports to the Head Nurse/Nurse Manager if standards fall below the accepted level. Advises Head Nurse if this is not happening. 2.2.3 Assists in the development and revision of Policies and Procedures using evidence based practice, thus developing written standards of care for the unit. Educational: 2.3.1 Ensures staff receives appropriate Clinical updating/training, minimally in areas such as Basic Life Support and Infection Control. 2.3.2 Ensures all grades of staff attend Fire Lectures annually and are updated with the various regulations relating to the Fire Policy. 2.3.3 Participates in training programmes as required within level of own experience and knowledge. 2.3.4 Works in conjunction with the Head Nurse in identifying training needs of the area. Identifies potential ways to meet these training needs. 2.3.5 May be required to participate in nursing related “On the Job Training” programme for members of the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces Programme. 2.3.6 Participates in staff assessment and development programmes and regularly advises staff of their progress and gives guidance in improving their level of performance. Quality Assurance: 2.4.1 Develops knowledge of the Hospital Quality Programme. Assists with the maintenance and development of the quality systems. 2.4.2 Is responsible for ensuring that all clinical and legal documents completed by the Nursing Staff are both accurate and legible.
