MATH – STUDENT LED CONFERENCE
Schedule about 20 min to sit down with your parents.
Gather materials: Math Spiral, math book, binder reminder.
Student Name:
Date of Conference:
Period:
Explain and show the following sections of your spiral.
Show at least three samples of each category.
GENERAL APPEARANCE:
Is the notebook sections neatly labeled with the headings “Jump Starter” or “Notes” or a home work
heading with page number and problem numbers, and date?
Is notebook set up in Cornell style – a left margin on every page? Left margin on note pages contain
important points, vocabulary terms, and asterisks indicating important examples. Left margin on HW
pages contain “fix-its.”
Every HW page is graded with a score (# correct / total pts), problems copied out with step-by-step work,
an answer column where each answer is marked correct or wrong.
EXPLAIN EACH CATEGORY:
Jump Starter: Explain the concepts that you practiced.
Notes: Point out the “lesson oval”, the concept, and the examples. Are the notes complete and examples
easy to read? Are there asterisks marked next to important points?
Homework: Look in the Binder Reminder and find the corresponding assignment by looking at the date
and page # and problem # heading. Is the assignment complete, work neatly spaced out and easy to
review?
Does the answer column show answers marked either correct or wrong? Are the “fix-its” clearly done.
Be sure to show some worksheets too.
MATH BOOK: Is your book covered? Since book cover notes can be used on the day of quizzes and
tests, explain how the notes you have on your book cover have helped you. Pick a lesson we have done
recently and show where to find the objective bullets, the teaching pages, and discuss several of the
examples and what they are teaching.
STUDY SKILLS: How do you study for quizzes and tests? Are you on time with your CRS’? How do
the corrections help you to understand your mistakes?
STRENGTHS: Discuss some of your strengths as they pertain to math.
SUGGESTIONS: As we learn new and initially difficult concepts, what strategies will you use to ensure
you understand the new lessons?
Will you be using our lunch time tutor sessions or asking parent for help?
PARENTS: please provide feedback to your child, positive observations and ways to improve, if
necessary.
Rate your child as a responsible learner using the scale 1 (needs improvement in all areas)
2 (making progress in a few areas)
3 (making progress in some areas)
4 (strong progress in many areas)
5 (outstanding progress in all areas)
