NORTHSTAR SURGICAL CENTER
COMMUNITY BENEFIT REPORT 2009
MAKING A HEALTHIER LUBBOCK
At NorthStar Surgical Center, our goal is to deliver the most comprehensive surgical
experience in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. And we are proud to be an integral
part of the Lubbock community and play a role in making the South Plains the best that it
can be. Delivering impeccable healthcare services is a significant part of the contribution
that we make, but there are many other ways that we can give back to the community and
region that has given so much to all of us.
Investing in capital improvements
It is our objective to provide state-of-the-art services to our patients and part of achieving
this goal is through new and enhanced technology. According to the American Cancer
Society, colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of deaths for men and
women. Screening colonoscopy procedures are a proactive approach to detecting this
type of cancer conclusively and effectively. In early 2009, we invested in the most
current gastroenterology scopes and monitors – enabling our board-certified
gastroenterologists to diagnose and treat colorectal and other gastro-related cancers faster
than ever before.
Development of new services
In 2008, we began providing bariatric lap band surgical services. An exciting and lifechanging concept, lap band surgery provides hope and better health to persons suffering
from lifelong obesity and its debilitating health effects. We are honored to partner with
Dr. David Hall, a board-certified general surgeon who has been performing weight loss
surgery for over 28 years and is recognized as one of the most competent and well
respected bariatric surgeons in the country. Together with Dr. Hall, we have been able to
provide new hope and better health to many people.
Increasing our depth
In additional to the arrival of Dr. David Hall, we are proud to have added to what is a
premier panel of orthopedic surgeons. Dr. Field Scovell returned to Lubbock in 2008
after the completion of his fellowship in sports medicine - complimenting an already
stellar sports medicine service line, which also includes Drs. Stephen Cord and Kevin
Crawford. Dr. J. Speight Grimes will be relocating his outpatient surgical practice to
NorthStar in mid-2009. Dr. Grimes is fellowship prepared in foot and ankle orthopedics
and is an outstanding addition to the Center for Orthopedic Surgery. Like any great team,
depth means everything. And we are dedicated to continuing to expand on our depth so
that we are always positioned to better serve our patients.
Being a good corporate citizen
Since our inception in 2001, NorthStar Surgical Center has made it part of our mission to
be a “good corporate citizen” and active in our fine community. We are longstanding
members of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, and take that membership very
seriously.
Additionally, we are proud to be able to support our community in contributing
significantly to the tax base. In 2008, we paid $399,867 in total taxes.
We feel that it is our responsibility to help train future healthcare providers at all levels.
Although we are not a teaching institution, we encourage student rotations through our
facility from the TTUHSC and South Plains College. And we are proud to have donated
$15,000 for the development of a science lab for the Wayland Baptist University
Lubbock campus located across Quaker Avenue from us on the North Loop.

NorthStar is committed to giving back and annually provides financial support to the
American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society,
