Policies for Science 10
A. Attendance Policy
If a student has missed a class, it will be recorded as an unexcused absence
unless, immediately upon returning to class:
1.
The student, brings a note indicating that a parent/guardian has phoned the
school and given an acceptable reason for the absence. Simply “sleeping in” or
”went out for lunch” will not be accepted as a reason and the absence will still be
unexcused.
2. The student is on an approved school or extra-curricular field trip and his/her
name is posted. It is the responsibility of the student to remind me if he/she is
in this situation.
An unexcused absence will be treated seriously and could be acted upon by either a
warning, detention or referral to the Administration.
Procedure for unexcused absences.
First Unexcused Absence:
Student is reminded, time and date of discussion is documented.
Second Unexcused Absence:
Parent is notified, student signs a contract.
Third Unexcused Absence:
Student is referred to the Administration with the necessary
documentation.
B. Assignment Policy
1. There are 3 types of assignments
1. Homework checks
- are direct questions from the text
- are usually worth 2-10 marks
- can be handed in any time, BEFORE THE UNIT TEST
***These homework assignments will be marked ZERO if they are not completed on the
due date. The ZERO will be changed to an OMIT if the homework is handed in before
the unit test. A mark of an “omit” does not count for or against your grade. In fact it is
actually your average mark!
Here is an example;
Percent on the HW: 85, 87, 65, 0, 98, 100, 85 the average is 74%
If the HW that is marked ZERO is completed before the test then an OMIT is given
85, 87, 65, omit, 98, 100, 85 the average is 86%

2. Formal assignments
- Are handed in and marked
- Are usually worth 30-70 marks
- Students are allowed to complete ONE set of corrections for full marks
All formal assignments will be given:
a) A due date
- 100% of the marks can be achieved
b) A dead date
- Assignments received between the due date and the dead date will have
a total possible mark of 50% of full marks.
- After this date, no marks will be given for the assignment 
3. Lab Reports
a. Labs are given a specific due date. Handing in a lab late is
unacceptable and will be given a mark of 0. No exceptions.
b. A student is only allowed to miss a lab period if the student has an
excused absence. Setting up a lab is time consuming and will only be
done once. Students that have an excused absence will be allowed to
make up the lab at a set date during lunch hour.
2. In order to get these dates extended the student:
a) Has an excused absence AND consults the teacher for an extension.
(Automatic extensions will not be given.) or
b) Has made arrangements with the teacher for help if he/she is having
difficulties.
(Difficulties without arranging for help is NOT a valid reason for an extension!)
3. A pattern of late or missing assignments will result in a phone call or letter home.
The time and date of this will be documented.
4. Students with chronic late or incomplete assignments will be referred to the
Administration and a phone call to the parents will be made.
5. Any student who is observed to be blatantly copying another student’s work will
receive a “0” for the assignment and parents and administration will be notified.
** “Assignments” include all homework assignments and lab reports.

C. Testing Policy
1.
The date of each test is usually decided upon by the class and announced a 5-7
days ahead of time.
2.
If a student is not ready for the test, due to an excused absence or if the student
is having trouble with the material AND is arranging for help with the teacher,
an extension may be arranged. This MUST be done at least TWO DAYS PRIOR
to the test date (assuming the student is present.) Students who do not make
arrangements for an extension may still have to write the test on the testing day
(regardless of how ready they feel.)
3.
A student who is truant during the period that the test is written will get a mark
of “0” and not be allowed to write the test. Parents/guardians will be notified of
this.
4.
Any student caught cheating on a test in any way will receive a “0” for the test,
parents and administration will be informed. The student will not be allowed to
“make-up” the test.
D. Late Policy
In this class, students are expected to be in class on time. Chronic lates will be
dealt with on an individual basis. There are consequences for tardiness!
