Co-chair Will Gonzalez convened the meeting and welcomed the members of the PVCC
President’s Circle and provided an opportunity for self-introductions.

Presentation provided insight of his work with students out of the classroom setting
featuring students participating in creating a “Sandbox” erosion simulation used to
simulate Grand Canyon creation
This project was featured by both National Geographic & The History Channel!

Spoke about “Emerging Leaders Wilderness Program” - 7 days outdoors in the
Sierra Nevada Mountains
Goals of this program are:

Leadership Skills

Teamwork / Teambuilding

Building a sense of community in an applicable way (via planning &
cooking for each other, etc.)

Learning wilderness survival skills

Upcoming Event: Bike Day (Date TBD)
Goals of this program are:

Bike parade on campus

Learning about bike routes to school

Learning about bike safety

Learning about basic bike maintenance

female, 30% male (youth, teens, adults & seniors)
It is a self-sustaining division
4141 Enrollments (down from 5750 in 2009-10)
Staffing: 2 FT and 1 or 2 student workers
Provides service at 2 campuses – Union Hills & Black Mountain
Provides feeder classes for Academic Programs (Art, Business, Computers, Finance,
History, Music, Theater, etc.)

Exercise: Game – 5 Most Unusual Things You Want To Learn

Each table was instructed to come up with ideas for things they have always
wanted to do/learn & write them down on one sheet. One person per table
volunteered to share all the table’s combined ideas with the entire group. This
helped to generate ideas for new classes!

Kudos - the Government Relations Staff from the MCCD are doing a great job
representing the district

Cave Creek gave jobs bill funding to their teachers because they hadn’t had an
increase in over 2 years. According to exit interviews: They are losing teachers in
mid-quarter, mid-semester, they are going to private businesses

Google gave them 750 chrome netbooks to demo valued at $700K because they
have a reputation for cutting-edge approach to technology

Reported about recently-held Veterans’ Stand Down program - Veterans receiving
24 hours of services:
- Receiving restored drivers licenses
- Working with sponsors to pay legal fees to resolve fines for veterans
- Doing planning session for next year

- PC is changing the model of this event format to a public discussion about an
issue or topic of concern to the community

several attended the tour
