Learning Dialogues Key Issues Presentation • PVCC North/YMCA Partnership – Dr. Paul Dale, Vice President of Learning Support Services, Kurt Conover, Interim Vice President of Administrative Services. Presented a brief history of the development of PVCC North. Provided information on why PVCC North is important, where we are today in regard to program strategies, current program offerings and the challenges that still need to be addressed. Reviewed floor plans, site and building locations, and an architect’s model of the proposed buildings, parking, and surrounding areas. • A brief group discussion ensued to provide feedback on three compelling questions presented to the council. The questions and the group’s recommendations follow here: 1. The establishment of PVCC presence in the far northeast valley will allow us to “start from scratch” with the design and delivery of a 1 college experience. What should the guiding principals be for developing the academic program? Multi-use Strong connection with PVCC—not isolated Student activities Engage people into the community Establish a sense of community Strong faculty input Learning Support Center Adequate support services (stand-alone advising...) Integrity—academic integrity Engaging the students Basic core of academic courses—nothing “excessive” at first Continuing Ed courses—focus on these for now Identify the needs and student base Dual enrollment is important—viewing local high school students as a natural feed-in to our college programs Know the consumer Summer courses Staggered start times Focus on information access; retention and student success Think of hybrid classes for the students Build on the principal of collaboration that has characterized the planning and start-up phase Offer learning support/student services at the high school (e.g., testing) 2. What have we learned from other PVCC new program start-ups that should guide us as we develop PVCC N? What will learning environment look like Personal touch: this is what we focused on when we opened PVCC (it still continues today with our warm and welcome environment) Community Advisory Group We do not provide enough resources, i.e., budget and stuff Continue to involve community and be good neighbor Need to be flexible Quickly react, respond, and move Know the consumer Establish an identity Have a good name brand—“Paradise Valley” is not an asset 2 Identity should revolve around Black Mountain Have great supervision and a great coordinator Give this college some level of autonomy Use project team approach. Establish a representative handshake with PVCC’s academic unit, learning support services, and administrative services as well as community collaboration i. Community Collaboration Council ii. Learning Connections 3. What attributes (from the proximate community character, geography, etc.) should influence the development of the PVV N campus? Art is an important element of the Carefree/Cave Creek community Equine influences Service learning / lecture series Technology Connect to global learning Increasing Boomer population—economic driver Can YMCA instructors be trained in PVCC class? Geology, fitness Early retirees want to create partnership with YMCA—good connector for PVCC N and Main Campus Discussion connections with the community Cave Creek Recreation Center Age of population—older population (health professions, teacher education) Art festivals—art classes Outdoor activities Build on sustainable/green/interdependent theme Tap into the diversity of the community i. Retired execs ii. Cowboys/western iii. Environmentalists To view a copy of the PVCC North PowerPoint presentation please click on presentation icon adjacent to meeting minutes. The integration of this material is implemented by Shelle Witten and Cinthya Ippoliti as they have refined the library orientation sessions provided to the English Division. Further, problems concerning the instruction of MLA format were discussed, and it was mutually agreed that the PVCC English Division would be the focal point of instruction for MLA format and style. It is interesting to note that both of these points of discussion have been subjects of Division Assessment for the English and Library Divisions. The Spring Learning Week sessions were well received by faculty, staff, and administration.
