Diversity and Inclusion – Norma Chandler
The Diversity and Inclusion Goals - Success for All Students, 2009-2010 has been finalized. The
committee decided to focus on two of the goals, specifically:
6

Increase the number of opportunities for students to interact with peers of diverse
backgrounds
 Ensure that student success is equally distributed across all socioeconomic, ethnic, age, and
gender group
The discussion eventually lead to safe spaces/multi-cultural lounge etc. Because of all the
unknowns, we decided to hold a Diversity/Inclusion Conference on April 2, 2010 or April 3, 2010.
Through this conference we could achieve many goals including asking the students what they need
to be successful through various diversity breakout sessions. During this conference we could
begin to address the peaceful state (mind/heart/spirituality) of the students as suggested by Umar
Sharif.
We also want to involve the students in the planning and organizing of this conference in which we
can also address topics important to each group in order to help students interact with peers of
diverse backgrounds.
Meanwhile, we will research community college programs and multi-cultural centers at our sister
colleges and throughout the United States to see the efficacy of a similar space at PVCC.
The Hispanic Center at Stanford University is called Centro Chicano. It served as a place for
Hispanic students to discover their heritage and held the following amenities and activities:
 Kitchen, lounge, study rooms, Library (music, books, and video on Chicano
literature/History/Chicano Rights etc.)
 Administrative office
 Promoted weekly and monthly Hispanic events including:
o Artist in residence (poets, authors, dancers, muralists, etc.)
o Gang Awareness and prevention
 Provided assistance to the community
o Tutored Middle and High School students on Saturday mornings (on campus)
o Also fed student's breakfast and mentored them to pursue a college education
o Held community health education fairs
o Hosted Hispanic community meetings in center
Next Meeting – Friday, January 15, 2010
