Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship in Leadership and Management
These qualifications are designed for managers, to support the development of their leadership and
management skills in personal development, leadership, management resources, information,
performance, customer and market awareness.
Knowledge qualification: Chartered Management Institute Level 5 Diploma
Management and Leadership
This element of the Higher Apprenticeship programme will be delivered over a 12 to 15 month period
consisting of 12 days delivery. These days will need to be agreed and arranged with the individuals to
accommodate work commitments etc. Usually this would be 1 or 2 days per month. The full Diploma
requires the candidate to complete a total of 9 units with a total credit value of 62. There are six
mandatory units and three optional units to choose from:

5004 – Resource management
5005 – Meeting stakeholder and quality needs
5006 – Conducting a management project
5012 – Being a leader

5007 – Financial control
5008 – Marketing planning
5009 – Project development and control
5010 – Human resource development
5011 – Managing recruitment and selection
5013 – Leadership practice
The assessment is via a range of methods using holistic assessment and group working. Individuals
will compile a portfolio of evidence as the programme progresses. This is based on the following
topics, all of which will be handed in at the end of the course:







Project of at least 5000 words – this will encompass a project management approach
Presentations (Individual and group)
Business plan
Team building activities
1 written assignment
Group problem solving exercises including write up
Reflective reviews
This is not an exhaustive list and other assessment activities will take place.
The programme has been designed to be challenging, yet fun and interactive focusing on team
working, team building, group activities and exercise. It is also designed to develop and build on
individual’s interpersonal skills and an appreciation of the importance of team working and leading
teams as well as working with people.

Candidates will be required to produce a comprehensive business plan based on building a business.
This will require the group to work together and manage resources as well as key tasks and
leadership skills.
The programme is interactive and requires candidates to take part in all of the exercises to allow for
group assessment and individual assessment.
Competence qualification: EDI Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Management
This element of the Higher Apprenticeship programme will be assessed over a 12 month period and
consists of assessments in the workplace. The aim of the qualification is to contribute to the skills,
knowledge and overall performance of management and leadership. Its purpose is to provide an
insight into the principles and processes of management and leadership and to aid career
progression.
It is designed for those who have moved into a management role at middle/senior level with
operational responsibilities, or those who not only have responsibility for staff, but may also have a
degree of responsibility for the organisation.
The full Diploma requires the candidate to complete a total of 38 credits. There are four mandatory
units and various optional units from which to choose.

Transferable skills: Functional Skills qualifications in English, Maths and ICT
This element of the Higher Apprenticeship programme will be assessed over a 12 month period
consisting of task based assessments conducted in a controlled environment. Each assessment
requires candidates to complete tasks relating to real life scenarios. Please note exemptions may
apply depending on accredited prior learning, which will be discussed and agreed during the
initial assessment process.
On completion of the programme, individuals who continue their membership with CMI will be
awarded the letters MCMI after their names and can progress to Chartered Manager status and the
Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership. More information on this will be discussed
during the course.
