The Chinese Society of Chemical Science and Technology in the UK
(CSCST-UK) is professional organisation organised by Chinese Scholars currently
working in the UK. It was established in April 1994 in London with the help of the
Education Section of Chinese Embassy in the UK after the initiation from a group of
Chinese who worked/studied in chemistry related areas at Oxford University.
More than 400 Chinese Chemists and Chemical Engineers currently working in the UK
are members of the CSCST-UK. They are from both industrial and academic institutions,
currently working in the organisations of government, education, industry and research.
Among the members, there are university professors, industrial scientists, university
lecturers, post-doctoral research fellows and postgraduate students. The CSCST-UK aims
to

(1) bridge its members with China

(2) provide its members with chemical information, particularly China related

(3) promote academic communications among members

(4) strengthen academic exchange with China.
These have been realised through, for example, the society's annual conferences,
organised publications in both China and the UK, informal discussions through
communication, and also the electronic publication via the society's journal [Chemistry
on Line]. The society has so far obtained funding from sources in both China and the
United Kingdom. The Headquarters of CSCST-UK is currently located at the University of
Oxford.
Glasgow (April 94-September 97), Cambridge (Oct. 97-Sept. 99), and Sussex (Oct.
1999-Sept 2001) were the previous headquarter locations. The CSCST-UK has
established good connections with various international societies and national
organisations.
For example, in the Chemical Society of Industry (SCI), there is a Chinese Section (SCICS) specially linked to the CSCST-UK, and its annual conference is co-sponsored by SCICS. In addition, CSCST-UK has close relations with the National Foundation of Natural
Science of China and Chinese Academy of Sciences, it always gets advice and support
from them.
Vice President Bai Chunli and Professor Zhang Cunhao et. al are advisors to the CSCSTUK. Up to now, 8 annual conferences have been held by CSCST-UK and SCI-CS in the
UK.
The keynote speakers of the conferences included Professor Bai Chunli (vice President of
Chinese Academy of Sciences), Professor John Walkers (Noble Prize Winner in 1997,
Cambridge University), Professor H. W. Kroto (Noble Prize Winner in 1996, Sussex
University), Professor Zhanfeng Cui (Paddock Professor, Oxford University), Professor
Graham Richards (Dean of Chemistry Department, Oxford University). The previous
chairs of the CSCST-UK committee include Dr. Li Jiang, Dr. Zheng Geoge Chen, Dr. Huiru
Tang, Dr. Jin-quan Yu and Dr. Junliang Zhou.
Since its establishment, CSCST-UK has been paying great attention to serving China.
Some CSCST-UK members have established very close relations with Chinese
institutions. For example, Dr. Zheng George Chen (Wuhan University), Dr. Heyong He
(Fudan University) and Dr. Renchang Sun (South China University of Science and
Technology) have been appointed as the Changjiang Specially Invited Professors.
Dr. Wuzong Zhou was appointed as an Overseas Assessor of Chinese Academy of
Sciences. More CSCST-UK members make use of their holiday time to visit Chinese

Academic organisations and exchange ideas with their Chinese colleagues. With China
entering WTO, the CSCST-UK will further strengthen its collaboration with China and try
its best to contribute to China.
