Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland Scrapbook Project-Based Assessment SWBAT: create a scrapbook that comprehensively demonstrates an understanding of theme, characterization, and symbolism in Lewis Carrol’s novel, Alice in Wonderland. CCSS: RL.11-12.1, RL.11-12.2, RL.11-12.4, RL.11-12.5, W.11-12.4, W.11-12.7 The scrapbook will contain a total of five (5) written documents, five (5) quotes, and five (5) symbols from the book. The criteria for each are as follows: Five (5) Written Documents Any of the following genres are acceptable for your written documents: ● ● ● ● ● diary or journal entries (minimum 125 words each) poems (any format and rhyme scheme is acceptable) newspaper articles (minimum 125 words each) letters (minimum 125 words each) dialogues (minimum 125 words each) At least three (3) of these written documents must be written from the perspective of the main character, Alice. The remaining two (2) documents can be written from any other character’s perspective. Remember, the goal of each written document is to show an understanding of theme, characterization, or symbolism. Five (5) Quotes At least five (5) of your written documents should contain a quote from the novel. This quote should be blended into your own writing to make it sound authentic. You are required to highlight and provide the page number for each quote that you incorporate/use. As you read the novel, you should write down any quotes that you think reveal themes, character traits or symbolism. Five (5) Symbols There are many items, objects, and events in the novel that have a deeper meaning. Think about the title of each section as an example. As you read the novel, pay attention to these symbols, ask questions in class discussions, and write down your ideas. You will “archive” at least five (5) of these symbols in your scrapbook. Any of the following forms are acceptable for your symbols: ● ● ● original illustrations (freehand, black & white, color, paint, etc. are all acceptable) original photos (photographs you have taken yourself) original graphic design through the use of the computer (Google images is NOT original) The Scrapbook Option #1: Please note that there is no need for you to buy a scrapbook. You should try to make your scrapbooks by hand. All of your written documents will be neatly typed and pasted into your scrapbooks. Option #2: You can choose to create a scrapbook in digital format (i.e., Prezi or PowerPoint). Should you select this option, it is required that you include all of the components listed above. Grading This project-based assessment will count as a test grade of 60% for the third marking period. There are valid connections, analysis and/or evidence from the literature. The assignment shows some 4 = 89-80 originality and creativity. The assignment shows the student understands the literature but may have some flaws and/or inaccuracies. The student’s work demonstrates some grammatical errors. The assignment is neat and presentable. The assignment meets the majority of the requirements. The student’s work shows a fair amount of knowledge of the literature. There are a 3 = 79-70 fair amount of connections, analysis, and/or evidence from the literature. The assignment many lack originality and/or creativity. The student’s work may or may not have grammatical errors. The project may be sloppy and lacking integrity. The assignment is missing the majority of the requirements but there is enough to demonstrate the student’s knowledge of the literature. The student’s work shows a limited/surface level knowledge of the 2 = 69-65 literature. There are very few connections, analysis and/or evidence from the literature. The assignment has many flaws and/or inaccuracies. The assignment may lack originality and/or creativity. The student’s work may or may not have grammatical errors. The work presented may be sloppy and lacking integrity. The assignment does not meet the requirements to fairly assess the student’s knowledge of the literature. The work doesn’t show an insightful knowledge of the literature. There are very limited or no connections, analysis and/or evidence from the literature. The 1 = 50 assignment lacks originality and creativity. The work has too many inaccuracies from the literature. The work demonstrates many grammatical mistakes that impact the overall understanding of the assignment. The work presented may be sloppy and lacking integrity. 0 No assignment done.
