Oxford Picture Dictionary (OPD) There are 12 units in OPD and within each of the units are several topics. Overall, there are 128 topics. When you open OPD, the program will begin with the unit screen. The units are: Everyday Language, People, Housing, Food, Clothing, Health, Community, Transportation, Areas of Study, Plants and Animals, Work, and Recreation. Once you choose a unit, the screen shows the topics from that unit. For example, if you choose the “Work” unit, you can then choose the “Computers” topic for practice with computer vocabulary. Within each topic, several components are good for Level 1 students. I. Explore a topic* On this page, students can click on radio buttons to listen to the word for each picture. The word will also appear on the bottom of the page. II. Practice A. Read & Find – shows word, you click on correct answer B. Listen & Find –listen to word and click on correct answer* C. Listen & Spell–listen to word & type answer (for Ss who know how to type) D. Identify & Spell–look at pic. & type answer (for Ss who know how to type) III. Special Activities (Topics have Reading, Job Talk, or Conversation, list is on next page.) A. Reading 1. Read & Listen – Listen to a passage as you read along silently* 2. Choose the Word – Fill in the blanks in a reading passage 3. Dictation – Listen and type six different sentences 4. Write – Write about the topic B. Job Talk 1. Listen to an interview w/ someone who has a job related to the topic* 2. Complete 4 types of activities (same as “Reading” above) C. Conversation 1. Read & Listen* 2. Choose the Word 3.
