Course: MGMT 4306 – Dynamics of Leadership 4. Term: Summer, 2011. 5. Instructor: Colonel Robert G. Morris, III, Ph.D.; brings to the classroom over 35 years of international Leadership, teaching, military, and diplomatic experience. During his 30-year career in the United States Army, he has commanded soldiers at every level from platoon through installation, including command of a Battalion task force in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He as also held a variety of Senior staff and Diplomatic posts including: Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, United States Army Europe, and as Director of the Emergency Operations Center for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization during combat operations in the former Yugoslavia, and the intense negotiations to admit former communist countries into NATO. Dr. Morris holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Pennsylvania Military College and a Masters of Arts in Management and Supervision from Central Michigan University. His postgraduate studies include a Diploma in General Staff Policy and Procedures from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and a Diploma In Strategic Operations Plans and Policy from the Army War College. Currently, he is Executive Director and Dean in the Sierra Vista Tucson area and has completed a Doctoral course of study in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management and Leadership. Doctor Morris has authored 4 leadership presentations including: "The Buffalo Soldier The United States Army and the Indian Wars 1867 - 1895"; "The Normandy Invasion, The Airborne Assault", "Operation Market - The Airborne Invasion of Holland"; and "Task Force Smith - The United States Army enters Korea". Dr. Morris won the Army War College writing award, and most recently the Northcentral University Dissertation of the Year award for his Dissertation entitled "An Exploration of Army War College Leadership Development" 6. Course Outcome Competencies: Upon completion of this course the student should be able to: Identify the historical styles and approaches of leadership. Demonstrate a general knowledge of the content and motivations of leadership styles. Compare and contrast the styles of leadership. Identify particular instances in which the leadership styles may be employed for maximum benefit. Describe and explain the leadership style of Christ. Describe the roles of a leader within the dynamics of teamwork situations. Identify the challenges that leaders will face in the future. Compare and contrast the leadership styles of effective leaders. 14. Attendance Requirements: All absences must be explained to the instructor, who will determine whether omitted work may be made up. I will accept late assignments only with prior coordination – Bulk assignments will not be accepted. 22. Acceptable Web Sites: Four types of websites will be accepted as source citations: government (i.e., US, State, local, etc.), academic (i.e., WBU and other libraries), companies and corporations (i.e., IBM, Raytheon, etc.), and organizations (i.e., Ethics.org; AMAnet.org, etc.). General-use sites, such as Wikipedia and Google are not accepted because of much unsubstantiated information and questionable authorships. Google Scholar and Books is permitted. 23. Writing and Documentation. APA 6th edition: Grammatically accurate and properly documented writing is paramount. A paper’s content is difficult to comprehend when there are numerous grammatical and documentation shortcomings. Students may receive writing assistance from the recently published WBU writing guide, any other writing style guide, and the American Psychological Association (APA) refresher at www.apa.org. In this course, the intent is to motivate students to elevate their writing skills to the next level of academic excellence. Students are expected to know grammar, style, organization, and to apply APA 6th edition documentation. To aid students A series of writing Labs will be conducted and Writing aids will be distributed 24. Participation: This course includes verbal participation in class exercises, activities, and contributions to class discussions. Overall course participation equates to the assigned points. The student must be present and actively involved to receive these points. The student may not make up these points. In a case of exreme emergency, I will consider make-up work but only if appropriate documentation is submitted. 25. Reading Assignments: Course readings are in accordance with the below week-by-week topics. Be prepared to discuss the concepts in class. 26. Homework Assignments: A series of homework assignments will result in development of a professional Organizational Leadership Plan (OLP), which will be written from your perspective as a concerned Leader. 27. Define and Relate Papers (DRP): Understanding the concepts is demonstrated in a series of DRP’s. In these four (4) page (approx), double-spaced, APA (6th ed.) papers, the student must define the operative concept(s) and discuss them in relation to his or her organization (or a previous organization). See the “Basic format of OLP discussion,” below, for specifics about OLP organization. A reference list of at least seven (7) sources is required; no more than three may be Internet sources. DRP’s consist of: a title page, thesis statement, definitions, discussion content, conclusion, reference page, and APA Level 1 headings are mandatory. Level 2 headings may be used. Evaluation of PowerPoint will be a combination of Knowledge, Question and Answers, and slide completeness, construction, and documentation. A Minimal quantity of slides is expected. 28.
