Re: Please vote NO on The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) Expansion Plan (PTS
130619)
Dear Council Member Gloria,
I support the Between Heights Neighborhood and the North Park Planning Committee in their
battle to convince The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) to work with the local community
on a Modernization Plan that works for both the community and the school.
I understand that there is a reasonable, viable alternative plan that gives the school the
educational improvements they need within their existing footprint and does not require the
removal of historic homes from the neighborhood.
1) I care about saving our city’s important historic resources. The lovely historic homes and
buildings of San Diego help define the unique character of our city. Historic preservation is the
modern & GREEN thing to do. Don’t allow OLP to remove Historic homes!
2) Institutions which willfully ignore city rules and regulations should not be rewarded by
having their past violations “regularized” without ever achieving compliance, no matter how
worthy the institution. OLP should not be rewarded for 12 years of willful non-compliance
with their Conditional Use Permit (CUP). Any future CUP amendment they receive should
have serious enforcement “teeth” and should have support from the surrounding community,
who have born the brunt of their long non-compliance.
3) The City Council should give proper weight to the decisions of local planning groups like
the North Park Planning Committee (NPPC). These groups are made up of dedicated local
volunteers who know the local issues and who put a lot of time and energy into reaching their
decisions. Their decisions should not be lightly overturned, and certainly not when their
decision is unanimous and as strongly worded as the NPPC’s denial of OLP’s current plan.
4) Developers and institutions should work cooperatively with their surrounding
neighborhoods when planning a development. Cooperation leads to better development and
less liability for our city. The Between Heights community has shown themselves willing to
compromise and work with OLP, but OLP has refused to cooperate.
Please turn down OLP’s current expansion plan and send them back to the drawing board.
Sincerely,
