MATH 60 - INTRODUCTION TO ALGEBRA TERM: TIME: ROOM: INSTRUCTOR: OFFICE HOURS: E-MAIL: Fall 2008 Monday-Friday 8:00-8:50am. CAS 528 Olga Stride 9:00-10am M-F CAS526. ostride@pierce.ctc.edu Prerequisites: Completion of Math 51 or 54 with a grade of 2.0 or better, satisfactory placement test score, or instructor permission. Course Objective: Learn basic operations with numeric and polynomial expressions; Solving linear equations, linear inequalities, systems of linear equations, And quadratic equations; linear graphs; applications. Text: Elementary & Intermediate Algebra, Fourth Edition. Alan Tussey and R. David Gustafson. This text is required. Please bring it to each class. Supplies: 1. White ruled paper, 8-1/2 x 11. Please, no colored or odd-sized paper and no ink. Complete all work in pencil. 2. Graph paper, 4 or 5 squares to the inch. Please do all graphing assignments on graph paper 3. A colored highlighter to identify corrected answers to missed problems. 4. A calculator is optional. You may not use the calculator on the first quiz. Exams and the final may have two parts, one without a calculator and one with optional calculator. 5. Access to a stapler. Expectations: 1. Attend class. Roll will not be taken. If you miss class, you are responsible for getting handouts, lecture notes, assignments and all announcements regarding quizzes, exams, etc. Please exchange phone numbers/e-mail with a classmate so that you have someone to call for missed assignments, schedule changes, etc. It is not necessary for you to inform me of your absence unless it conflicts with an exam. PLEASE DO NOT CALL OR E-MAIL ME FOR ASSIGNMENTS OR MISSED ANNOUNCEMENTS. 2. Do your best to be on time. Late arrivals are very distracting to classroom work. Please plan to stay for the whole period. 3. Come prepared. Turn off all cell phones. No texting during class. 4. Participate in class. Ask questions. We will do a lot of problems together and your attention to these problems will aid in your understanding. 5. Let me know if you need extra assistance or if you are falling behind. There are numerous opportunities to get help outside of class. 6. Help create and maintain a positive learning environment. 7. Plan to spend about two hours outside of class for each hour in class. In other words, it requires, on average, about ten hours per week for the average student to get an average grade. This is a lot of time because learning requires time. 8. Demonstrate academic honesty at al times. While I expect and urge you to work together on homework and certain in-class assignments, you may not collaborate on quizzes and exams, and you may not use your text, notes, or other aids. For exams, I will ask that you spread out your seating so that you have plenty of room to work and no one will be tempted to copy your efforts. “Cheating or the appearance of cheating will not be tolerated and will result in immediate action, including the possibility of failure of the exam or expulsion from the class with a failing grade.” Evaluation: HOMEWORK: 100 points (10 home works). I urge you to work together on homework or in Tutoring Center. Be sure to check your answers. To receive homework points, you must show your work and it must be neat and organized with the assignment identified, date of the assignment, problem number circled, and answers clearly marked or highlighted. If I cannot easily and quickly follow your work, I cannot give you the credit you deserve. Please begin each new assignment (section) on a separate sheet of paper. I will grade six (6) randomly selected problems. Each problem is worth two (2) points. Each assignment is worth ten (10) points. If you get all the problems correct and have turned your assignment in on time, you will receive 12 out of 10 points. That’s right, two (2) points of EXTRA CREDIT. THIS IS THE ONLY EXTRA CREDIT I GIVE. It is important that you keep up with the homework from the book, as many of the problems assigned may show up on quizzes or/and exams. It is your responsibility to ask questions regarding the homework for understanding of the problems. Homework will be collected two(2) days after was assigned. Late homework will be given half-credit. After one week, no credit will be given. QUIZZES:100 points (10-12 quizes) Most of the problems on these quizzes will be taken directly from assigned homework or from previous daily work. EXAMS: 500 points (5 exams) These will be given in class. Although each exam will not require an entire class period to complete, you will be allowed to use the full class period, if you wish. Some exams may have a take-home component. FINAL EXAM:200 points (150 in class and 50 home-part) Covering all the material in the course. Scheduled for December 10 during Final Week. No make-up possible. If you know in advance that you will not be able to take the final on the assigned date, let me know and it may be possible for you to take it earlier (but not later). Grading: 1. Incomplete (I) grades are not given except under very unusual circumstances, which must be discussed with me. Typically, an incomplete is given when a student who is doing well in the course misses a small amount of work (such as the Final Exam) due to an emergency (hospitalization). 2. It is your responsibility to be informed as to the deadlines for audits, withdrawals, etc. 3. Grades will be computed by dividing the total number of points you have earned by the total points possible (approximately 680). You will need a grade of at least 2.0 in Math 60 to take your next math class, which is assumed to be Math 98. 4. You may access your grade for this class by touch-tone system (253-588-8599) or online. The percentages, letter and decimal grades are as follows: Percent GPA Percent GPA Percent GPA Percent GPA 97 -100 4.0 89 3.4 79 2.4 69 1.4 95 – 96 3.9 88 3.3 78 2.3 68 1.3 93 – 94 3.8 87 3.2 77 2.2 67 1.2 92 3.7 86 3.1 76 2.1 66 1.1 91 3.6 85 3.0 75 2.0 65 1.0 90 3.5 84 2.9 74 1.9 64 0.9 83 2.8 73 1.8 62 – 63 0.8 82 2.7 72 1.7 60 – 61 0.7 81 2.6 71 1.6 < 60 0.0 Other Information: 1. Students with disabilities who believe they may need academic adjustments, auxiliary aids or services to fully participate in course activities or meet course requirements are encouraged to register with the Access and Disabilities Services (ADS) Office, Room 300K in the Cascade Building. You may also call the ADS Office to make an appointment to meet with the ADS coordinator at 253-964-6536 or 964-6527. Students requesting accommodations must obtain the Approved Quarterly Academic Adjustments, Auxiliary Aids or Services (green) form provided by ADS. 2. For life-threatening emergencies call 911 and then Campus Safety. In the event of an emergency evacuation, gather all personal belongings and leave the building using the nearest safe exit. Be prepared to be outside for a minimum of an hour and stand a minimum of 200 feet from any building or structure. Do not attempt to re-enter the building until instructed. Should a class be cancelled, it is your responsibility to keep up on reading, homework, and deliverable assignments. 3. There will be a constant effort made by all of us to help create and maintain a positive learning environment in the classroom so that all of us will feel free and comfortable to participate. 4. I hope you will always feel welcome to talk to me about the course. If you are falling behind, need extra help, or are feeling anxious, please do not hesitate to make an appointment so we can talk. 5. I, as your instructor, have the right to add, delete, or rearrange the course content or deadlines as necessary, and you will be given reasonable notice of such changes You must earn a grade of at least 1.5 in order for this course to apply as your QS requirement for graduation. You must earn a grade of at least 2.0 in order for this course to be used as a prerequisite for the next math course (Math 98). If you do not get a 2.0, then you should take Math 60 again and get a higher grade next time. After Math 98, there are various math courses you might take depending on your major. Check with your advisor to review what math course is best for your course of study. Note: These are even numbered problems. The answers to the odds are in the back of the book and are worked out in the solutions manual. If you can’t figure a problem out, try the odd problem on either side of it. 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.7 1.8 1.9 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 2.6 2.7 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 3.5 3.6 4.1 4.2 4.3 4.4 5.1 5.2 5.3 5.4 5.5 5.6 5.7 6.1 6.2 6.3 6.4 6.6 6.7 6.8 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72, 74, 76, 78, 80, 82, 84, 88, 92, 96, 100, 104, 106, 108 Through 1.6 AS NEEDED 2, 4, 6, 10, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 22, 24, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66, 70, 74, 78, 82, 86, 90, 94, 98, 102,106, 108 2, 4, 6, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40,44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66, 70, 74, 78, 82 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46,50, 54 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96, 100 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, 22, 26, 28, 36, 38, 42, 46 4, 6, 8, 10, 18, 22, 26, 32, 36, 40, 44, 46, 50, 18, 20, 22, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 86, 94 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 36 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 30, 34, 42, 48, 54, 56, 66, 76 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56 2, 4, 6, 12, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 44, 50, 52, 62, 66, 70, 72, 74, 78, 82, 94, 100 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 80, 84, 86, 92, 96 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 44, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66, 70 10, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 44, 48, 58, 60, 62, 70, 72 8, 10, 12, 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, 56, 58, 60, 68, 70, 74 12, 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, 56, 62, 68, 74, 80, 86 4, 6, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 46, 50 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 26, 28, 32, 34, 36, 42, 50, 52, 60, 64, 70, 76, 82, 90, 96, 106, 112, 118, 126 2, 4, 10, 14, 20, 22, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, 56, 62, 68, 74, 80, 86, 92, 98, 104, 110, 116 4, 6, 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 42, 44, 56, 58, 62, 66, 72, 82, 86, 94 2, 4, 8, 12, 18, 20, 22, 40, 44, 50, 54, 58, 64, 66, 82, 86 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66, 72, 82, 88, 94, 100, 106, 108 6, 8, 16, 20, 24, 26, 30, 34, 40, 46, 52, 58, 64, 66, 70, 76, 78, 80, 82, 86, 110, 114 2, 4, 10, 16, 22, 28, 34, 40, 46, 52, 58, 64, 72, 78, 84, 90, 96, 102 2, 6, 14, 16, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 60, 64, 68, 74, 78, 82, 84, 86, 90, 94, 98, 102, 108, 112, 116 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 62, 64, 68, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96, 100 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66, 70, 74, 78, 82, 90, 94, 96, 100 2, 6, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66, 70, 74, 78, 82, 86, 90 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 38, 42, 46, 50, 56, 58, 62, 66, 70, 74 6, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96, 100 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42
