College Algebra
Welcome: Welcome to College Algebra! You are to have completed the prerequisite (Math
070 or equivalent) with a “C” or better.
Textbook: Our textbook is College Algebra by Lial, Hornsby, & Schneider, Custom Edition
for COC, taken from the 10th edition of the regular book.
Exams and Grading: You will have five 65 minute exams worth 50 points each plus a
comprehensive final exam worth 100 points. I will replace your lowest regular exam score
with half your final exam score if it raises your average. No make-up exams will be given.
The score on a missed exam will be half your final exam score (if you miss only one exam).
Your grade in the course will be determined as follows:
5 exams
Comprehensive Final Exam
Homework Quizzes (Highest 4 or 5)
Total
250
100
40
_________
390 points
I use the usual grading scale of 90% - 100% "A" , 80% - 89% "B" , etc.
Homework: Homework will be assigned every class meeting. You will have 5 homework
quizzes given the day after each of the five exams. Each quiz will be worth 10 points and will
consist of 5 homework exercises from the sections that were covered on the exam the
previous meeting. I will drop your lowest homework quiz score.
Calculator: A scientific calculator is required. You would benefit from having a graphing
calculator, although it is not required. I will be giving illustrations in class using the TI-84 Plus
Graphing Calculator. On most exams, however, you will not be using a calculator.

My requests for you are:
1. Please attend class regularly. If you miss class five times, I have the option of
dropping you from the class. Being tardy twice will count as one absence.
2. Please do not chew gum in class.
3. Please do not talk to your neighbor while I am explaining a
concept. Be an active listener.
4. Please do not leave class early unless it is absolutely necessary,
and in that case, please tell me before class.
5. Please silence your cell phones and other electronic devices and
put them away before class.
To enhance your chances for success in this course:
1. Make a commitment to spend several hours on
homework between classes .
2. Keep an open mind and positive attitude.
3. Make use of the Math Lab in the new TLC by the library.
Good Luck!
