SELF STUDY
I have spent countless hours studying on my own. Chinese medical theory has been a major study
of mine beyond what is listed above. Much of my research is focused on medicinal herbs and includes
investigation into traditional Chinese herbal medicine, including non-TCM traditions, such as Chinese
medicine as it relates to martial arts. Even my study of non-Chinese herbs has largely revolved around
Chinese theory, such as with the work of Michael Tierra, David Winston, and Peter Holmes. Additionally,
I have enjoyed the study of Taoism and other subjects that relate to Far Eastern energetics.
Among my most cherished reference books are The Yellow Emperor’s Classic, The Fundamentals
of Chinese Medicine (Maciocia), The Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine ( ), Diagnosis in Chinese
Medicine ( ), Hara Diagnosis (Matsumoto), The Secret of Chinese Pulse Diagnosis (Flaws), Li Shi-Zhen’s
Pulse Studies (Li & Morris), Tongue Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine (Maciocia), Atlas of Chinese Tongue
Diagnosis (Kirschbaum), Atlas of Shiatsu (Rappenecker & Kockrick), Applied Channel Theory in Chinese
Medicine (Wang), Chen Man Ching’s Thirteen Chapters (Chen),
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
I have practiced shiatsu through my own office since I earned an Associate Membership with
AOBTA in February, 2004. I have also completed hundreds of shiatsu sessions at the Lodge at Woodloch
(in Hawley, PA), where I have been employed since 2008.
Additionally, I have worked as an herbalist for the last 10 years. This work includes consultations
with clients during which I rely largely on the same assessment skills I use in shiatsu, along with myriad
teaching scenarios. Much of my teaching is focused on making Traditional Chinese Medicine theory
accessible, understandable, and usable for the average person.
When I teach ongoing classes, I delve into yin/yang theory, five elements theory, and the theory of
the fundamental substances, along with others. I offer introductory classes through the Lodge at
Woodloch, local health food stores, and at other locations on a weekly basis; and more in-depth classes I
have held at homes, my office, and at wellness centers. I currently offer classes at Greenridge Chiropractic
and Wellness (in Scranton, PA), at Worker Bee Community Acupuncture (in Milford, PA), and at Northern
Light Natural Foods (in Hawley, PA).
