Publications Department Job description Background Founded in 1901 to ‘bring great art to the people of the East End’ the Whitechapel Gallery was the first public space to show some of the great names of British 20th Century Art, including Hepworth, Hockney and Gilbert & George, as well as premiering great international modernists such as Picasso, Pollock and Rothko. Global in scope and reputation it has in recent years shown definitive surveys of artists such as Sophie Calle, Peter Doig, Isa Genzken, Paul McCarthy, Gerhard Richter, Cy Twombly, Jeff Wall and Franz West; as well as important theme shows such as The Short History of Performance, Back to Black and Faces in the Crowd. The Gallery’s dynamic lectures and debates programmes are complimented by film, music and poetry events. Renowned for its pioneering work in arts education and training, the Whitechapel Gallery is also a publishing house. Its distinctive gallery spaces, auditorium and studios house temporary exhibitions devoted to modern and contemporary art, new commissions and collection and archive displays. The London Art Book Fair is an annual event devoted to international art publishing. Hosted by the Whitechapel Gallery in association with Marcus Campbell Art Books, The London Art Book Fair presents the work of individual artist publishers, galleries, magazines, colleges, arts publishing houses, rare book dealers and distributors alongside a wider associated programme of talks and events. ……. This year the London Art Book Fair 2010 will take place at the Whitechapel Gallery from 24-26 September 2010. Role The publications department sits within the exhibitions department and consists of the Publications & Retail Manager, the Publications Assistant and the Publications and Edition Assistant. The role of the intern will be: To assist the publications department with all aspects of the organization of this year’s Book Fair in the run-up to, and the month after the event. Duties and responsibilities London Art Book Fair Assisting with the run-up to the Whitechapel Gallery Book Fair, scheduled for September. This might include event assistance, liaising with suppliers and exhibitors and general duties on the events.
