The Arizona Department of Transportation and Arizona Department of Health Services are pleased to co-sponsor two FREE workshops: Writing a Competitive Safe Routes to School Grant Workshop & Active School Neighborhood Checklist The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, created in 2005 by Congress under the federal SAFETEA-LU bill, addresses the growing epidemic of childhood obesity and diabetes. One primary cause of the epidemic is children's inability to get physical activity, such as biking and walking to school, due to many communities’ lack of safe and convenient ways to do so. Federally-recognized tribes, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, state, local, and regional agencies, and non-profits are eligible to receive reimbursement funds for elementary/middle schools to implement infrastructure projects (e.g., sidewalk improvements, trails & traffic calming) and non-infrastructure programs (e.g., education campaigns, law enforcement efforts & prize giveaways).
