JOB TITLE: Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Community Liaison (Part-time)
REPORTS TO: DYVPI Operations Manager
LOCATION: The primary office will be at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters. However, a significant amount of time will be in the field.
SUMMARY: Advance the mission of the Detroit Youth Prevention Initiative (DYVPI) by working colleagues, SRTS partners, school personnel, and community members to promote violence prevention and personal safety in support of a city-wide Safe Routes to School strategy.
MISSION: The mission of the DYVPI is to foster a violence free environment where youth can thrive with the goal of safe schools, safe communities, and a safer Detroit.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serve as a liaison between DYVPI, schools, students, parents, and SRTS partners with a focus on: o Coordinating activities that encourage safe and walkable communities during SRTS hours; o Developing and delivering presentations that address student safety concerns and discourage participation in behaviors that place students at risk of violence; o Working with DYVPI colleagues to create opportunities for young people to inform, plan, implement, and evaluate SRTS activities; o Developing a SRTS Toolkit and serving as a resource for consultation and technical assistance to established and interested SRTS patrol teams in the areas of recruitment, communication, and incident and performance reporting; o Working with DYVPI colleagues as a resource in the facilitation of restorative mediation and other conflict resolution best practices.
Serve as a member of a city- wide Safe Routes to School partnership responsible for managing the implementation of an effective, data-driven safety strategy for students and parents traveling to and from school working collectively, responsibilities will include, but not limited to: o Recruiting volunteers to increase SRTS patrol coverage; o Encouraging students and parents to use established safe routes; o Identifying, remediating, and/or escalating environmental issues and safety concerns; o Collecting and analyzing data to inform SRTS strategies and promote successful performance outcomes.
Serve on a variety of safety committees and participate in community and school events as assigned.
Document activities, prepare and present regular reports, and success stories, as requested.
Perform additional related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Workplace success is contingent on the ability to commit to embrace data driven strategies, work across organizations; in addition to building and maintaining effective collaborative relationships.
• Daily activities will include, but not limited to: off-site meetings, school visits, and patrol monitoring.
• Commitment to continuous improvement, evidenced-based models, and best practices is expected.
• Attendance and participation is frequently required for evening and weekend events.
• Regular travel to communities across Detroit; use of a personal vehicle is required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's Degree in a field related to responsibilities preferred. Additional education or training in Restorative Practices, conflict resolution, mediation, dispute, and/or peace studies is a plus.
• Two years professional experience working with children and adults in an academic or social service setting.
• Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
• Self-motivated, positive and engaging attitude, with the ability to work independently and within a team.
• A minimal of two (2) years community engagement, event planning, and project management experience.
• Working knowledge or experience of the local and national Safe Routes to School models a plus.
• Ability to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, program partners, and representatives from other agencies.
• Able to keep accurate and timely records of activities and complete grant reports.
• Good written and verbal communication skills; strong computer skills including proficiency with
Microsoft Office programs. Experience using web-based tools and social media are important.
