____ Editor: Must be familiar with Microsoft Word or Google Docs, excellent at grammar and
have good computer skills. You will basically be in charge of the layout of the newspaper and
putting everything together.
____ Reporter/Writer: Writes feature stories about events going on at JMI including
activities, clubs, etc. You must be a strong writer and enjoy typing.
____ Reviewer: Writes reviews of books, music, video games and/or movies.
____ Photographer: Takes digital photos of school events and puts them on the computer.
Each applicant must complete ONE the following as a sample of your work:



Editors/Reporters/Writers: Submit a sample of your work. Write a sample
newspaper article about a real JMI event or a made-up one. Be sure to include a
headline, byline (telling who is writing the article), and a catchy first sentence.
Make your article free of major spelling and grammatical errors. This must be
typed and should be stapled to this application form. Look at real newspaper
articles for inspiration.
Reviewers: Write an example review of a book, CD, video game, or a movie.
Tell your opinions about it—why you liked it or didn’t like it. Make your review
opinionated and interesting!
Photographers: Take a digital picture. Print it out or e-mail it to michele.baloghsileski@edison.k12.nj.us and include a one or two sentence explanation of what
the event is that you took a picture of.
