Safety: In the organic chemistry laboratory safety comes first. It is the issue to be covered first and
foremost.
Materials Needed:
Textbook: Microscale Techniques for the Organic Laboratory, Dana W. Mayo, Ronald M. Pike, Peter
K. Trumper; 2-nd Ed.,John Wiley & Sons.
Chemistry laboratory safety goggles, metric ruler, scientific calculator, organic molecular modeling kit
(recommended, chemistry laboratory apron or coat, report notebook (with duplicate pages), "Sharpie"
permanent marker (black, blue or red).
Grade Composition
The total laboratory grade will be composed of the following components:
a) Quiz:
2 Safety quizzes, 10, 20 points
Pre-laboratory quizzes/report checks 5 points each
Lab quizzes, 10-40 points each.. (One, except for the 40 point quiz, is dropped)
b) Report:
Lab reports 10-30 points each (One, except for the 40 point lab, is dropped)
Grade is based on : Quality of report, organization, content of writing Results, Unknowns, Technique,
Products Cleanliness, promptness, attitude, safety. Your lab report will be initialed by the instructor so
you must attend the lab in order to receive credit.
Lab reports will not be accepted more than 2 lab periods late. The grade will reduced 20% per lab period
that it is late. If you fail to complete and turn in more than two lab reports your Chem. 211 grade will be
no higher than a D. A lab will be considered late if it is not turned in stapled at the beginning of class.
Total Grade For LABORATORY ----------30% of Chem. 211
Note: In order to receive a passing score, you must receive a passing grade in both the lecture and the
laboratory, and also on the final examination.
"Fatherly Advice"
PREPARATION is the key to doing well and having a pleasant experience in the organic chemistry laboratory. To prepare
for the experiments, you should:
a) Read the experiment and try to understand it as much as possible,
b) Write up a PRE-LABORATORY PROTOCOL
I want you to succeed! If you foresee a problem talk to me before it gets out of your control.
Have a safe & fun semester!

Plagiarism Policy: Although you are encouraged to discuss your lab work with other students, your data and your written
work is to be original to you. You may consult other students, texts, and the internet when doing your work. But any
sentences or phrases that are not original to you must be referred to with a footnote. Any concepts that you use to explain
your results in a lab write-up must be referred to with a footnote.
Safety: All safety procedures specified in the Safety handouts must be followed at all times in the
laboratory. Failure to work safely in accordance with those as well as any other safety procedures
presented to you in the safety film, in written experiment instructions or verbal instructions from your
lab instructor, can result in your being removed from the lab. Failure to wear safety goggles can result
your being removed from the lab.
Safety Quizzes: Each student in the chem. 211 lab must thoroughly read and understand the material
presented in the required safety handouts. Safety quizzes will be given in the second week of lab
during the quiz section. You may not miss more than 5 questions on the general safety quiz and no
more than 2 questions on the organic safety quiz. If you do not receive satisfactory scores on both
quizzes, you will be allowed to retake each quiz once. If you do not get a satisfactory score after
retaking a quiz, you will receive an F grade for the lab portion of the course. If you choose not to drop
the class and remain, knowing that the lab grade and the course grade will be an F, you will not be
allowed to do any experiments.
