Gastroenterology & Hepatology Curriculum This version of the curriculum has been modified by the London Specialty School of Paediatrics for use by local trainers. It identifies which competencies will be provided on regional training days, on simulation courses and compulsory training courses as part of the training package. All competencies in black font have been identified as competencies trainees are expected to obtain in their local trusts, by clinical experience or by local teaching programmes. initiate management of patients presenting with common gastroenterological problems in acute and outpatient settings recognise when to request a specialist opinion Level 2 Acute abdominal pain Level 1 Level 2 Acute vomiting and/or diarrhoea Jaundice understand the role of interventional procedures eg endoscopy or colonoscopy in the investigation of gastroenterological disorders continuing neurodisability, psychosocial problems know the causes of dysphagia continuing development of level 1 competencies know the causes of malabsorption including coeliac disease and cystic fibrosis and its consequences understand the principles of treatment of the different types of malabsorption continuing development of level 1 competencies know the causes of malnutrition including be able to initiate investigations be able to manage simple constipation with and without soiling recognise when to liaise with more senior paediatricians, specialist nurses, psychologists and psychiatrists be able to follow local and national guidelines for management be able to distinguish between organic and functional dysphagia recognise the role of the dietician and to liaise appropriately be able to explain and initiate investigations, nutritional assessment, dietary principles and liaise appropriately with dietician be able to assess organic and non-organic causes be familiar with the consequences of malnutrition Level 2 Iron deficiency anaemia Level 1 know the principles of enteral and parenteral nutrition support continuing development of level 1 competencies know the causes of iron deficiency anaemia including poor diet, bleeding, malabsorption nutritional status be able to initiate investigations to establish the diagnosis and to detect nutritional deficiencies be able to manage iron deficiency anaemia understand factors which predispose to dietary iron deficiency anaemia Level 2 be aware of the consequences of the condition continuing development of level 1
