The Powell River Regional District has changed their lawyer handling the barge landing site court case initiated by six plaintiffs on Malaspina Promenade. This has caused some delay in the proceedings. ASIC anticipates that on behalf of our members we will seek Intervenor Status in this case. At present, our lawyer is communicating with the lawyer for the plaintiffs. To read details of the lawsuit, and ASIC's comments to the previous PRRD lawyer, please visit www.savaryislandcommittee.ca. 2. ELECTION UPDATE & DEADLINES. The October 12 deadline for ASIC Director nominees has passed. There are 5 nominees in Area-A, 3 in Area-B and 3 in Area-C. Each of these Areas has 3 positions to be filled. Therefore, Area-A is the only one that will require an election. If you live in AreaA (Mace Point up to and including Phyllis Road) election information will be emailed to you on October 31 (hard copies mailed 2 days earlier for non-email members) and will include instructions for voting, and the biographies of the nominees. Those same biographies are below. Your emailed votes must be received by ASIC by Wednesday November 7, 5pm Pacific Time. We will accept hardcopy votes from members without email at the ASIC P.O. Box 222, Lund, BC, V0N 2G0 by 5pm Friday November 9. 3. AREA-A NOMINEE BIOGRAPHIES FOR THE NOVEMBER ELECTION OF 3 DIRECTORS: BILL CLARKE Dear Islanders: I wish to present myself as a candidate for Area-A. My interest stems from a very long history at Savary: 1945 - spent summer vacation at Royal Savary Hotel (age 12). Early 1950s - came to Savary with Baxter family. 1954 - married Sandra Baxter and continued summers at Savary. 1959 - purchased the old Savary Inn from Phyllis Landale (still owned by Sandra Clarke, first wife). 1970s - past president of S.I.P.O.A. 1974 - separated from Sandra and left BC for many years. 1992 - returned to BC, and married Janis who had come to Savary in 1966, and who had bought the old store in 1975. Currently - secretary of S.I.P.O.A. With my life's experience, I can offer a sense of calm and reason in ordinary or unusual circumstances. Respectfully, Bill Clarke whclarke@telus.net --------------------------------------BRIAN HESTER I have lived in Savary Shores for the last seven years. Although the island is not my primary residency, I try to spend at least a long weekend on island every month and make sure to get a long extended time during the summer. My off island time is spent running a consulting company in Calgary. I am very attached to Savary, and as a caring community member, I believe that participation in ASIC is key to our island’s future. ASIC is our voice as property owners and residents to communicate with each other and with all relevant authorities. Presently there are several issues under review by ASIC. Here is my stand on them: 1. The letter sent on August 7th, 2012 by ASIC to the court on the barge landing was necessary. I agree with the summary offered in this correspondence: the barge landing is an essential service for all islanders. 2. ASIC has been working diligently to design a parking system on Malaspina that works for all residents. If the new regulations are not effective, I support escalating to stage 2 ‐ towing and impounding. Although there are costs associated with this option, I believe the taxes we pay the PRRD should offset some of these costs. Issues that I feel should be discussed in the future with the PRRD: 1. As we are receiving an increasing number of visitors, I believe that, sooner as opposed to later, temporary public washroom facilities should be supplied for the busy summer months. The PRRD should be responsible for the facilities. The ASIC job is to ensure that they are lobbied and that they deliver on this public health issues. 2. Beach trail maintenance ‐ the PRRD should either supply materials for the maintenance of the public beach trails or do the maintenance themselves. Brian Hester bhester@cabra.ca --------------------------------------DAN MCINTYRE I have been coming to Savary since the 1950's, as has my wife Nancy Lee. My cottage is next to Ashworth Walk on Malaspina. I was a founding member of SIC and served for multiple terms. I am a business lawyer by training and practice in Vancouver. My hope is to maintain and improve the quality of life on our Island for ourselves and ongoing generations. I am hopeful this can be accomplished in a mutually beneficial way. Daniel B. McIntyre dan@danielmcintyre.com --------------------------------------BRYAN MILES My wife and I have been property owners since 1975 and we spend approximately seven months of the year on Savary and the balance of the year in the Vancouver Lower Mainland. Island Involvement: - Incumbent ASIC Director for Area-A elected in November 2010. - One of three Trustees responsible for administering the Water System for Savary Shores Improvement District. Prior to my retirement, I owned and operated a Sales and Marketing Company doing business in the Access Control and Security Hardware Industry. Throughout my working career I was an active volunteer involved in several Industry organizations, serving as Canadian President of the Door and Hardware Institute and as a three-term Director of the same International Association. I am seeking a second term as a Director for Area-A. As Savary Island continues to develop and grow, I believe my experience of serving on the previous ASIC Board will be an asset in the ongoing process of identifying and resolving the issues facing the community. The knowledge I have gained these past two years has further built upon my understanding of the multiple perspectives of its residents; I believe I offer a positive contribution to the effort of recognizing and responding to the needs of Savary Island. Your support in this election would be appreciated. Respectfully submitted, Bryan Miles bryanmiles@shaw.ca --------------------------------------JON STEEVES I’m a self-employed documentation specialist who lives in Vancouver. My family has owned a cabin on Savary near South Beach since 1999. Up to this point we’ve had almost no political involvement on the island. However, I’ve decided to run as a Director for Area-A, so that I can try to give back something to the island and the islanders that have given so much to us. Though I’ve very little political or administrative experience at the local level, I once worked as a House of Commons researcher and administrator in Ottawa, so I do know something about how to get things done politically, i.e., I know how to find out who to phone, how to phone them, and how to phone them again and again and again.... I don’t have any specific political agenda right now, but one thing I do know is that we Savary islanders pay a lot of property taxes and I don’t believe we receive the kind of services that we should get in response. With this in mind, if I’m elected, I’d like to pursue this further and find out what people on the island need (e.g., some sort of semi-regular garbage collection) and then see if we can get it. Cheers, Jon Steeves jon@mootgame.com --------------------------------------4. AREA-B NOMINEE BIOGRAPHIES. (NO ELECTION, DIRECTORS ACCLAIMED) GRANT MALCOLM Please accept this letter as confirmation of my intention to run as a representative for Area-B for the Association of the Savary Island Committee. My partner, Sandi and I, came to Savary Island 7 years ago. After renting a cabin for 4 weeks we totally fell in love with the island. Within 2 years we purchased property in Area-B, and are now slowly building our cabin. Our plan is to live on Savary full-time sometime in the near future. I spent 23 years in BC government service in an administrative supervisor capacity. I worked with government officials and private small businesses. This gave me knowledge in project management. After leaving government service I ventured into owning a successful gardening and landscaping business. For 6 years I served on the board of directors for “Rehabilitation through Sports,” assisting underprivileged youth. Some of the issues on Savary that I feel strongly about include: Recycling, road improvement, beach preservation/clean up, community trail preservation, and any other issues that are affecting Savary Island. The future of Savary Island and its residents are important to Sandi and me. Grant Malcolm G1c2m3@hotmail.com --------------------------------------KIM WALL Please accept this letter and bio as my application to, once again, run in the upcoming ASIC election as a representative for Area-B. My husband and I moved to Savary Island in April of 2010. We currently own and operate The Savary Island Resort and have been full-time residents for 2-1/2 years. I have served on ASIC for the past two years and am hoping to continue on for the next term of 2 years. Being a board member on ASIC has been very rewarding. There have been significant changes made and there are many more to come. 2013 will no doubt bring its share of issues to Savary Island and I hope to be a part solving the challenges we are likely to face. I live here. I work here. What happens here is important to me. I thank you for your support. Kim Wall savaryislandresort@gmail.com --------------------------------------SHERRYL YACIANSKY No biography available at this time. --------------------------------------5. AREA-C NOMINEE BIOGRAPHIES. (NO ELECTION, DIRECTORS ACCLAIMED) BUD GRAHAM I am writing to confirm my interest in running for Area-C re-election in the ASIC November 2012 election. I have been visiting Savary Island with my wife for over 40 years. We co-own a recently consolidated lot behind the MacLean family property on Squirrel Lane, where we are now building. Our permanent residence is in Victoria, BC and we now spend about 5 months on island each year. I am a retired senior public servant with experience both in the Federal and Provincial governments. I currently work part time for BC Ministry of Agriculture and do some consulting. I hold a Masters Degree in Natural Resource Management and I am a retired Registered Professional Biologist. For two years I have been Chair and President of ASIC, and am running for re-election to advocate for the interests of Savary Island property owners and residents with various levels of government and to work to help address transportation issues on the island. Sincerely, C.C. (Bud) Graham budgraham@shaw.ca --------------------------------------DONNA STOBBART Please consider this letter as my application for election as an ASIC Director, Area-C, on Savary Island, BC. In 1995, my husband, Brian and I, assisted by the “help” of our four small children, built our first cabin at Indian Point. Since that time, we have all loved summer living on the Island, working at the cabin, enjoying the local residents, participating in community festivities, and entertaining new visitors to the island. Many family hours have been spent exploring the Savary shores, affectionately known as “our piece of paradise.” When asked why I am running in the ASIC election, my thoughts are brought to some of the island transitions I have seen over the past 17 years. I recall a time when it was an unwritten rule to respect neighbourly peace. There was a sense of camaraderie within all points of the Island; where no one area was more relevant than another. I don't anticipate returning to past times; however I do believe all residents, and property owners, regardless of where their property may be located, need to stand united with our current practices and our future path. My related experience for the past decade has been as Procurement Manager at Catalyst Paper and presently as Customer Service Manager with City Transfer Inc. I have extensive knowledge with recycling, waste management, supply chain, and logistics. My passion lies with community involvement and ensuring we reach common goals. I like to work towards mutual satisfaction to ensure no one goes without; I’ve even volunteered 10 days in Haiti to rebuild a flood damaged Orphanage in the summer of 2011. I believe my experience and passion lies with improving the lifestyle of every person living, and visiting, Savary Island and I believe I can foster a renewed attitude toward joys of “island living.” My focus as ASIC Director will be working together so we can all foster and enjoy a satisfying way of life for our tiny island that many call home and holds a special place in so many hearts. Donna Stobbart donnastobbart@citytransfer.com --------------------------------------RON WONG Retired M.D. after 50 years of practice in B.C. Married to Carol; four adult children. Owner of Savary property for over 40 years. Wealth of experience serving on Boards, Committees, etc. Church, School Board, President of New Westminster Medical Society and Founding President of Surrey Medical Society. Founding President of C.J.M.A.S. a charitable organization supporting heath and educational projects in Jamaica. We send medical equipment to hospitals in Jamaica and provide scholarships to bright but poor students from the Community we support. Carol and I have been full-time residents of Savary since 2010. My areas of concern are; Proper SEWAGE and GARBAGE disposal and DUST control on our roads in Summer. With your support, I think I can achieve these goals. If successful, I will then turn my attention to creating a fully-integrated recycling program on Savary. Thank you. Ron Wong ronnyiwong06@hotmail.com --------------------------------------6. PARKING AVAILABILITY. Review of the parking availability in the vicinity of the wharf on Malaspina Promenade and Ashworth Walk indicates that the new parking configuration is inadequate for the number of vehicles choosing to park in the area in early October. Due to the lack of available parking spots, vehicles are parked alongside the cement barriers intended to disallow parking. The result is that the remaining road width is narrower than before. We anticipate that this overcrowding will be met with signage and penalties in Stage 2 of the PRRD’s parking plan, unless Savary property owners request more parking availability. If you are concerned or affected by the congestion of vehicles in the wharf area, we urge you to write to Clint Monson, Area Manager at the Ministry of Transportation clint.monson@gov.bc.ca and to Regional Director Patrick Brabazon brabazon@shaw.ca with a cc. to savaryislandcommittee@shaw.ca 7. ASIC MEMBERSHIP - SPOUSES ARE ELIGIBLE. ASIC currently has 732 members and all Savary property owners and their spouses/partners are eligible to become members. Spouses do not have to be on title. If your married or common-law spouse's name is on title as the owner of a Savary property, ASIC considers you to be a co-owner, and you are therefore eligible to be an ASIC member. Membership is free, but you do have to sign up. The only obligation is for members to keep ASIC informed regarding their contact information and any changes to that information. Members vote at the AGM and in the biannual election of Directors, and receive the Board's monthly email Updates keeping them apprised of Savary issues. Only Area-A members can vote in the coming November election, provided they have signed up by October 24. To become a member, please email Sharon Feduniak at sfeduniak@gmail.com.
