General Description (Purpose and Function):
In conjunction with the Director, Medical Collections this individual will develop and implement clinical service policies
and processes to reduce inefficiencies and maximize revenue by improving the quality and timing of medical
collections. In order to accomplish the goals and objectives of this position, this individual will manage the day-to-day
operations of the medical collections team.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities (For Non-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort):
 Oversees, evaluates and monitors on-the-job performance of staff responsible for fee collections. Monitors
supervisors and employees to ensure that employees report to work on time and complete time sheets.
 Coordinates staff vacation in accordance with UM policies while maintaining adequate staff to handle the
patient call volume.
 Monitors the automated call distributor for the Self-Pay collectors to maximize patient contact and minimize
abandoned calls.
 Meets weekly with supervisors to review productivity reports involving answered calls, outgoing calls and
collections.
 Monitors Self Pay Accounts Receivable for the hospitals and direct collection activities to maximize cash,
reduce A/R and increase customer service satisfaction.
 Monitors the UMSM Self Pay collection process on an ongoing basis and make suggestions to the Associate
Director on process changes and develop and implement process improvement plans that will improve
overall performance.
 Reviews and update Collection Agency processes in accordance with policy.
 Monitors all collection agency activity with collection agency liaisons for the hospitals.
 Provides information and ideas regarding strategy and operational initiatives to Director, Medical Collections.
 Monitors budget and identifies opportunities for cost reduction.
 Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
 Ability to manage and coordinate the activities of other employees and ensure a high level of performance.
 Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD9 & CPT4 coding used for diagnoses and medical treatments.
 Computer skills that include MS office.
 Posses a basic working knowledge of all modifiers, surgical modifiers in particular, CPT and ICD-9 coding
and how these three items drive reimbursement.
 Knowledge of third party payor requirements, reimbursement rules, and laws and regulations that govern
collection activities including the Florida Prompt Pay Law.
Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):
 Bachelor’s degree.
