24 Hour Urine Test Patient Information Sheet
Your Doctor has asked you to perform a 24 hour urine collection; please follow these
instructions carefully
write your name and date of birth on the container
at the start of the collection period empty your bladder and discard the urine; write
the time on the container
during the next 24 hours put all urine that is passed into the container
do not urinate directly into the container. Use a clean container (such as a jug) to
transfer the urine to the bottle
end the collection exactly 24 hours after the start time by emptying your bladder and
adding the urine to the container
take the completed collection to your GP or the Pathology Reception at Derriford
Hospital as soon as possible with the green request form
check the cap is firmly in place before transporting the container and after each
addition of urine

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR ACIDIFIED COLLECTIONS
do not empty the container; it contains strong acid preservative which may cause severe burns
do not urinate directly into the container. Use a clean container (such as a jug) to transfer the urine to
the bottle
SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS FOR 5HIAA MEASUREMENT
avoid the following for 3 days before, and during the period of, the urine collection - avocados, bananas,
chocolate, eggplants, figs, grapes, kiwifruit, nuts, pineapple, plums, tomato (or juices made from these
products).
list all medications (especially antihypertensives and antidepressants) on request form.
