THE WALL OF LEGUMINOUS PLANTS
a project that can be done on ugly schoolwalls, fences, etc. URBAN GARDENING - id est: gardening
that needs no ground soil and can be done with little water
materials needed
plastic bottles, (best big ones like 1,5 or 2 litres)
small pieces of styrofoam
planting soil
seeds of different leguminous plants (but all edible), 2 per bottle done in teams by 2 pupils per team
pupils should collect many different seeds, as we have many different nations per class, we ask them
to bring seeds from their countries of origin
bottles are used horizontally and an opening cut out (see image 1), also some holes in the bottom( to
let water drip out), and a hole in the base of the bottle, with a strong thread or wire pulled through
soil is mixed with styrofoam pieces (90 percent soil, only 10 percent styrofoam) and the bottle gets
half filled
seeds are pre-germinated ( to show they are still ok) and then planted into the bottles (image 2)
keep the bottles in class, until the plant is approx 5 cm high
then hang up all the bottles - in a distance of about 30cms and at least 3 rows above (image 3)
only the upper row should be watered, till the water drips down to the last row
