The minutes of the meeting of the General Education Committee of March 1, 2005 were approved and amended with one abstention. 2. The Department of Biology’s proposal to withdraw the course BIO 102 The Human Body from the Scientific Analysis category was approved. 3. The Department of History’s proposal to classify the course HST 290 The West and the World: Africa Encounters Europe into the Contemporary World category was approved pending Curriculum Committee changes. 4. The Department of Political Science, Economics, and Philosophy’s proposal to classify courses into the Contemporary World category: PHL 266 Environmental Ethics - approved PHL 243 Comparative Religion – approved, and the course was removed from the Social Scientific Analysis category. PHL 233 Race Discrimination: A Philosophical Analysis - tabled ECO 256 Analysis of Underdeveloped Areas - tabled 5. Then new CUNY proposal to revise Task 2 of the CUNY Proficiency Examination was discussed. Committee comments will be forwarded to the Central Office. 6. Marianne Carlin presented an Assessment of the Effectiveness of Advisement. An assessment of 360 students advised by Academic Advisement was presented. Interesting and notable facts concerning General Education were revealed. Issues concerning the length of time it takes students to complete General Education requirements and how students might be encouraged to complete them in the first two years were discussed. Update on General Education definitions and proposed lists. New definition of Scientific Analysis requirement was approved. Courses fulfilling the Scientific Analysis requirement [belong] to the disciplines of Natural and Applied Science, Technology and Mathematics. These courses are designed to enhance the students’ knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts, methods, practices, and applications, seeking to develop a basic understanding and appreciation of science in general, as well as of a particular science field. These courses are intended to give students the opportunity to develop their ability to reason and their capacity for rigorous critical analysis. 3. Department of History proposal for courses to be considered in Contemporary World category 4. The following course was approved to satisfy the Contemporary World category HST 278 20th Century Europe The following courses were tabled for consideration as satisfying the Contemporary World category HST 235 Modern Middle East HST 274 Modern Russia HST 290 The West and the World: Africa Encounters Europe HST 291 The West and the World: The Americas Encounter Europe Department of History and Program of Women’s Studies proposal to classify a course in the Social Scientific Analysis and Pluralism and Diversity categories HST 217/WMS 217 Introduction to Women's History was approved 5. Department of History proposal to classify three courses in general education categories as follows: a) Social Scientific Analysis and Pluralism and Diversity categories HST 229: History Of Religion From Antiquity To Our Times was approved b) Social Scientific Analysis HST 219: Greek And Roman Mythology was approved HST 321: Themes In Classical And Hellenistic History was not approved 6.
