Teacher: Subject/Content Area: Date(s): 8/27-9/10 Tyler McDaniel Lesson Learning Objective(s): Analyze works by Henry Moore and define abstract sculpture and nonobjective art (Show-Me Standards 2.3, 2.4), (Fine Arts 2,3). Produce at least 5 sketches of ideas for their abstract sculptures (Show-Me Standard 2.5), (Fine Arts 1). Produce an abstract sculpture using wood, wire, glue, panty hose, and paint (Show-Me Standard 2.5), (Fine Arts 1). Evaluate the differences in two pieces of artwork (Fine Art 5). Direct Instruction Vocabulary: GLE Code(s): PP.1.B, PP.2.A., AP.2.A., DI- Kinetic and Potential Energy/Artwork PI- mobile, stabile, balance, symmetry, aesthetics, three dimensional List or describe the main Essential Nine or other instructional strategy for this lesson : Identifying similarities and differences- student will discuss and analyze the difference between abstract and non objective art. Briefly describe the main Instructional Strategies and Student Activities: Visuals: I will have 3 examples of other students work, showing a wide range of possible outcomes. This way the students realize there are many different ways to approach the project. V. Supplies and Equipment Blocks of wood (various sizes) Wire (clothes hangers or any other) Panty hose Paint Hot glue or super glue VI. Teaching Procedure A. Introduction Slide Show 1. Discuss the students previous knowledge of abstraction and the concepts behind it. 2. Discuss what the students then think about abstract sculptures. 3. We will look at some abstract sculptures by Henry Moore, and have the students talk about what they see. Have them explain what kinds of line, colors, forms, or shapes they might see. 4. I will then give them a brief background on Henry Moore the 20 th century abstract sculpture artist. B. Demonstration 1. I will show the students how they will be creating their sculptures. I will take a piece of wood and drill two holes in it anywhere I see fit. Then I will take a clothes hanger and cut off the curved part and insert the two ends in the holes and hot glue them down. I will then bend and mold the pieces using my hands or pliers to create an abstract shape. I will then stretch a piece of panty hose over the wire and base creating one uniform sculpture. I will then discuss paint and how they might cover their sculpture to create an interesting piece. C. Work Period 1. I will have the students start to work on their abstract sculptures. D. Closure 1. Since this will be a multi-day assignment I will have them clean up their area and their paint they might have out. Then put their sculptures on the back table where they won’t get messed with, and so they can dry. How will students be assessed on the above objective(s)? Formative: Formative- Students make use of knowledge of abstract art and nonobjective art to create an abstract artwork. Students abstract sculpture assessed using formal rubric Summative: Summative- Common assessment over abstract, non objective, and Henry Moore.
