SODIUM
Sodium is a mineral that the body needs in small amounts for fluid balance, the conduction of
nerve impulses and the contraction of muscles. Without adequate levels of sodium, normal heart
rhythm cannot be maintained. Although some sodium is necessary in our diets, keeping within the
recommended amounts can prevent or reduce high blood pressure and reduce your risk for heart
disease and stroke. The dietary guidelines for healthy American adults for sodium intake is
2400 mg per day. Many Americans consume 2-6 times that amount!
Main Sources of Dietary Sodium:
1. Processed or convenience foods
2. Salt added to foods at the table or during cooking
3. Dining out
Facts About Salt and Sodium:
Salt is made of Sodium = Chloride (NA + Cl)
1 teaspoon of salt = 2400 mg sodium
1 salt packet = 500 mg sodium
Reading Labels for Sodium content:
Always read the serving size first!
"Low Sodium" means the product contains no more than 140 mg of sodium per serving
"Reduced Sodium" means that the sodium content has been reduced at least 25% from the
regular version
The % Daily Value is based on 2400 mg recommended intake of sodium
You can cut down on your sodium intake by choosing whole foods whenever
possible and seasoning your foods with herbs and spices!
