It is designed to familiarize the students with enough English to read research literature and be familiar with technical terms in special Education in preparation for their graduation projects. Class reading articles, grammar web sites and video series would be used during class times. Writing will be always emphasized in class. Course Objectives: This course aims at helping students: By the end of the course students would be able to: 1- Identify the specialized vocabulary of the related courses in the semester of study. 2- Read long English selections from the research literature related to the topics of the courses they are studying. 3- Converse in class with each other and the instructor about beginning concepts and passages of English. 4- Use features of English grammar correctly. 5- Write a good amount of English text related to vocabulary, reading comprehension and beginning written language literacy. 6- Translate relevant texts from English into Arabic. 7- Identify some language functions and their relevant words and phrases. 2 Course learning outcomes: By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1- identify key vocabulary related to the reading selections covered in class and their equivalence in Arabic. 2-use key vocabulary in sentences of their own. 3- make their own word dictionary of the specialized vocabulary 4-use some effective reading strategies in reading specialized texts in special education. 5-discuss important topics and issues in special education related to the reading selections. 6- use the grammatical features taught correctly whether in speech or writing . 7-use the online grammatical site effectively http://www.English4u.com 8- Converse in English in an appropriate way using some language functions acquired in class through the language video series ( A weekend away ) 9- Write simple paragraphs correctly. Content: There is no required textbook for this class. Readings will come from articles supplied by the course instructor for the special education program. They are articles, abstracts, and research studies related to the field chosen from the library books, journals and on line sites. A group of questions are always generated by students and the instructor after the readings .A list of terms is provided by the instructor. Students are also provided with grammar exercises and worksheets chosen from English textbooks to practice correct language usage and prepare for writing short paragraphs. Language 3 functions are to be introduced through materials and the video series. Instructional Strategies: A variety of interactive teaching strategies are used: discussion, lecturing and cooperative learning groups .Watching videos are also employed. Students are always encouraged to generate questions related to the reading selections. Different language skills activities are also encouraged. Course Regulations: Students are expected to: 1- attend all classes. 2- do all their home work and submit it weekly. 3- complete their assignments and submit it on time. 4- be active participants in the classroom. apply what they learn in the field settings 5- attend their course tests in time unless it is a case of emergency. 6- abid by the important timelines agreed upon at the beginning of the course .
