Patients requiring in-patient admission will be admitted to the 4-bedded in-patient unit under the care of the post-holder. The post-holder will also act in a consultative capacity to locality Consultants caring for sector patients with eating disorders (also with AEDS support). This is a service which adds to the excellent range of services across NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, which has well-developed integrated CMHTs and Crisis Teams, as well as specialist services including Perinatal Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and First Episode Interventions. There are also strong links with the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Glasgow, so that there are excellent opportunities for research, and it is expected that the postholder would be granted the status of Honorary Lecturer. Applicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Job Description CONSULTANT IN EATING DISORDERS – NHS GREATER GLASGOW & CLYDE 1. Applications are invited for this 8-session post based at Florence Street Resource Centre, Glasgow. The post-holder will provide mutual support for the Adult Eating Disorder Service (AEDS), and will provide the medical care for four inpatient beds, based at MacKinnon House, Stobhill Hospital in North Glasgow. The post-holder will be supported by a Team Secretary. 2. Present Service Provision AEDS has been providing community care for patients with eating disorders throughout Greater Glasgow since January 2008. It aims to treat patients primarily in the community, and to facilitate discharge from hospital, where a period of in-patient treatment has been necessary. The AEDS Team manage patients in the community in partnership with the CMHTs. There is a shared model of physical care with the GPs, but it is foreseen that a medical officer will be appointed to the eating disorder service who will eventually take over this role. There is a Day Patient Programme based at the Florence Street Resource Centre which runs for 2 days a week; it offers a service both to patient in the community and also to patients on the ward. When ward patients are to be discharged their treatment is moved from the ward to Lifeskills (an OT facility with kitchen), and then onwards to the Day Programme, with discharge being co-ordinated throughout by the key worker. The post-holder will provide consultation to the AEDS team, especially through the weekly team meetings, and will liaise with the GPs, medical staff and other psychiatric consultants on a regular basis. There are particular links with the Liaison Service, which provides cross cover to the post. A MARSIPAN group has been set up with the aim of ensuring optimal liaison with the acute wards. Admissions to the unit are planned, and the AEDS team continue to provide input throughout the patient’s stay on the ward. Discharge from the ward is co-ordinated across AEDS and general adult psychiatry so that a robust community plan is produced. In total there are 4 inpatient beds based on a general adult ward at MacKinnon House in Stobhill Hospital, where the general staff also have a high level of expertise in the treatment of eating disorders. The Clinical Director at MacKinnon House is Dr Olwyn Gallagher and the Head of Mental Health is David McCrae. Some patients may be admitted to their local wards when appropriate, e.g. when there is a co-morbid psychiatric illness, and will be looked after by the local consultant, although both the eating disorder consultant and the AEDS team may provide support at this time. There may be the possibility of eventually setting up a West of Scotland Eating Disorder Unit. Junior doctor cover will be provided by the page-holder, although junior doctors may spend sessions in the eating disorder service by agreement. Cross-cover is likely to comprise cover for general adult patients at MacKinnon House. It is expected that the post-holder should apply to become an ST4-6 Trainer. The AEDS Team currently comprises of a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, who is Head of the Service, 1 Band 7 Team Co-ordinator, 1 Band 6 Dietician, 1 Band 6 Occupational Therapist, 1 Band 6 Nurse, 1 Band 5 Nurse and a Band 3 Team Secretary. Since its inception in early 2008, AEDS has significantly reduced the amount of inpatient admissions. Referrals to AEDS are routed through the CMHT, and the CMHT key worker will continue to function as a link once the referral has been accepted by AEDS. Admissions to the in-patient beds are routed through AEDS, of which the post-holder will be an integral part. Discharges from the inpatient unit are facilitated by AEDS, which then liaises with the GP in terms of shared care. The AEDS caseload currently amounts to 30, though this may rise to approximately 40 if the catchment area extends into Clyde. The amount of patients being treated compulsorily at any time amounts to 0.2. 3.
