Explain ways in which the EU and national government can create industrial regeneration in South Wales or any other named industrial concentration in the EU which you have studied (8) The industrial concentration in the EU I have studied is Glasgow. The ways in which the EU and national government can create regeneration is to provide subsidies to companies native and international who wish to set up in Glasgow. This includes paying workers wages for a set period, tax reductions or tax free imports and exports and money for new infrastructure. These all encourage businesses to go to an area and allows it to begin to regenerate. This is due to the high amount of jobs that provide the population with an income and takes the strain off benefits and allows the government to regenerate more housing and education. The EU and the government also provide regional aid- a discretionary scheme of different tiers of aid for the worst off areas. Vertex a company which deals with the banking side of Tesco moved to Glasgow due to government incentives and now provides 200 permanent jobs at the Atlantic Quay in the city. This provides stability and allows people to rebuild their lives. The infrastructure around Glasgow has been greatly improved in recent years. There is now a fast train link between Glasgow and London. The road links have been greatly improved with the recent extension to the M74 and the M80 making the area much more attractive to industry 80
