Wesley Sowers, MD Biosketch Wesley Sowers is currently the Medical Director for the Office of Behavioral Health in the Department of Human Services of Allegheny County, PA. He is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Director of the Center for Public Service Psychiatry there and its associated fellowship program. He is board certified in Adult Psychiatry with sub-specialty certifications in Addiction and Administrative Psychiatry. He is the Immediate Past President of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists and has served on the Board of Directors of that organization since 1988. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Psychiatric Administrators and a member of several other professional organizations. He is Addiction Section Editor for the Community Mental Health Journal and is currently the Chair of Scientific Program Committee of the APA’s Institute on Psychiatric Services. Clinically, he has extensive experience in the provision of treatment and services to special populations such as homeless men and women, criminal offenders, sexual minorities, and substance users. He has made numerous presentations and written extensively about these areas of interest. He is the co-director of the Recovery to Practice curriculum development grant from SAMHSA to the APA and the American Association of Community Psychiatrists. He has also served abroad as Medical Director for organizations in El Salvador and Sudan. He is graduate of Brown University and the Northwestern University Medical School and completed residencies at the Cook County Hospital and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. He has a wife, two daughters (6 & 12), one cat, and an overly ambitious garden. He loves to play tennis, ski, and read fiction and he is trying to learn to play guitar again.
