Presently there are approximately 30 Associates, but only 9 Fellows. Of these, only one has been awarded to a Fine Art photographer. It should be noted that these are not honorary awards, but are given on the judging of a specified portfolio of work, which may be accompanied by a dissertation. The awards follow closely the criteria set by the British Institute of Professional Photographers and other European professional photography institutes. Fellows and Associates in these countries are held in high esteem in the teaching profession. RESEARCH For the purpose of visual and technical advancement, an ongoing technical and process research programme is necessary. This has resulted in a high level of refinement in the so-called 2 Curriculum Vitae: B W Cnoops Page 3 ‘Alternative Photographic Processes’ or ‘Antique Processes’: Cyanotype, Gum-Oil (Oleo Pasto Process ) and van Dyke Brown ( more accurately known as the Argento-Ferrotype process) processes, which are notoriously fickle in practice. Certain innovations and a close cooperation with an industrial chemist have resulted in superb quality in the processes. The Fellowship in Fine Art Photography was awarded as a result of the cyanotype research, together with a short dissertation.
