The Perinatal Mental Health Project (PMHP) is a project within the Centre for Public Mental Health of the Department of Psychiatry
& Mental Health at the University of Cape Town. The PMHP has been operating for more than eight years in the public health service, providing a multidisciplinary mental health service for pregnant and postnatal women. In addition to service development, the Project engages with research, training and advocacy work. These posts are soft funded on permanent academic conditions of service.
The Project is currently advertising two permanent part-time (25 hours per week) positions, for appointment as soon as possible, as follows:-
Senior Research Officer

The Senior Research Officer will lead the Perinatal Mental Health Project ((PMHP) and will be based at the PMHP offices on UCT’s
Sawkins Road campus. The successful incumbent will have oversight of clinical and research at several sites in the greater Cape
Town area and should be available for national / international travel 2 to 3 times per year.
The main purpose of this position is to:
Provide leadership in the development and management of integrated mental health services for pregnant and postnatal women in public health sector
Play a central role in the strategic development of maternal mental health in South Africa
The job will involve leadership of all programmes within the PMHP. These include oversight and strategic development of: service delivery, research, teaching, training, advocacy and fundraising.
Requirements:
MBChB with a
Master’s degree in maternal, mental or public health
A minimum of 5 years clinical experience post internship in women’s health in the public sector
A proven research track record preferably in women’s mental health
Experience in maternal health and mental health service development
Proven track record of successful fundraising
An ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders: in academia, public, corporate and non-governmental sectors
Good interpersonal, organisational and motivational skills
The ability to work well in a team and independently
Excellent presentation, teaching and training skills and experience in this with a wide range of audiences
Excellent academic and report-writing skills
A valid driv er’s licence and able to travel to project sites.
Proven programme management skills.
The appointee will be based at the PMHP offices on UCT’s Sawkins Road campus, but will visit clinical and research sites at several sites within the greater Cape Town area. The successful incumbent should be available for national / international travel 2 to 3 times per year.
The main purpose of this position is to:
Co-ordinate, manage and improve the effective running of the PMHP
Play a central role in the strategic development of maternal mental health in South Africa
The job will involve co-ordination of all aspects of Project activities. These include: service delivery, research, training, advocacy, project and financial management.
Requirements:
Master’s degree in Public Health, Psychology, Development Studies, Social Work, Nursing or other relevant discipline
A minimum of 5 years experience in service and research project co-ordination
A proven research track record preferably in Public Health or related discipline.
Knowledge of maternal health and mental health within the public sector
Proven experience in the development, management and monitoring of services in resource constrained settings.
An ability to liaise with stakeholders where mental health concerns compete with other health priorities for limited human and infrastructural resources.

Senior Research Officer: R309 197, based on qualifications and experience.
Research Officer: R 251 952, based on qualifications and experience.
