ION MEMORIZATION LIST Directions: Memorize this list of ions. It is important that you memorize the ions exactly AS THEY ARE TYPED. This includes capital or lowercase letters, subscripts, +/- charge, and magnitude of charge (superscript numbers). The spelling of the ion name must also be exactly correct. Even a one letter difference means the difference between sulfate (SO42-) and sulfite (SO32-). Look for patterns to make memorization easier. You must understand these terms: MONATOMIC ION = single atom with a charge. POLYATOMIC ION = group of atoms with a charge. MONATOMIC IONS(see periodic table) CONSTANT CHARGE TRANSITION METAL IONS Positive 1+ H+ Li+ Na+ K+ Rb+ Cs+ Fr+ (notice absence of Roman Numerals) 2+ Hydrogen Lithium Sodium Potassium Rubidium Cesium Francium Be2+ Mg2+ Ca2+ Sr2+ Ba2+ Ra2+ Beryllium Magnesium Calcium Strontium Barium Radium 3+ 4+ B3+ Boron C4+ Carbon Si4+ Silicon Ag+ Al3+ Cd2+ Zn2+ Silver Aluminum Cadmium Zinc POLYATOMIC IONS Positive (NH4)+ (H3O)+ Negative (notice all monatomic negative ions end with –ide) Negative 1- 2- 3- F- Fluoride Cl- Chloride Br- Bromide IIodide At- Astatide (H- Hydride) O2- Oxide S2Sulfide Se2- Selenide Te2- Telluride N3- Nitride C43P Phosphide Si43As Arsenide 4- MULTIPLE CHARGED MONATOMIC IONS (notice Roman numerals) Cu+ Copper (I) Cu2+ Copper (II) Fe2+ Fe3+ Sn2+ Tin (II) Sn4+ Tin (IV) Hg22+ Mercury(I) Hg2+ Mercury(II) Iron(II) Iron(III) Ammonium Hydronium Pb2+ Pb4+ Lead(II) Lead(IV) Carbide Silicide 1- 2- (C2H3O2)- Acetate (CH3COO)- Acetate* (OH)Hydroxide (NO3)Nitrate (MnO4)Permanganate (ClO)Hypochlorite (ClO2)Chlorite (ClO3) Chlorate (ClO4)Perchlorate (HCO3)Hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate) (CN)Cyanide (CO3)2(Cr2O7)2(C2O4)2(O2)2(SO4)2(SO3)2- 3Carbonate Dichromate Oxalate Peroxide Sulfate Sulfite (PO4)3- Phosphate *Acetate may be written either way. We will use the first one most of the time. Formula Quizzes Quiz 1. Can use notes and ion sheet… Quiz 2. No notes, and +1 monatomic and constant charged metal ions are missing.
