Biennial Report 2005

7 July 2005
Activities of ICCP since 2003
Reported by Zev Levin, President of ICCP
1) The 6th International Cloud Modeling Workshop was held in Hamburg, Germany,
12-16 July, 2004.
The meeting was hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M)
Co-chaired by Daniela Jacob (MPI-M) and Wojciech Grabowski (NCAR).
About 60 researchers from Canada, China, France, Germany, Hungary, India,
Israel, Japan, Libya, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Ukraine, and USA participated
in the workshop.
Prior to the workshop datasets of well documented cloud observations were
distributed and the participants simulated the open or blind cases. During the
workshop the results were presented, compared and discussed. Furthermore, the
workshop consisted of generic oral presentations and posters. In addition during
the workshop a special mini-workshop on convection was held.
2) The 14th International Conference on Clouds and Precipitation 19-23 July, Bologna,
Italy.
The conference was attended by 430 scientists from around the world.
The Chair of the Program Committee was George Isaac of the Meteorological
Service of Canada, who was also the outgoing President of ICCP.
Sandro Fuzzi, of the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate in Bologna,
was the Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee.
Professor Hans Pruppacher was the Honorary Chair of the Conference.
There were 538 extended abstracts from 39 countries in the three volumes of
proceedings discussing a wide variety of topics, including aerosol and cloud
interactions, cloud microphysics, cloud dynamics and cloud modeling.
The conference held a special mini workshop on how aerosols affect precipitation,
and a special IAMAS/WMO Panel has been set up to assess our knowledge in
this area, reporting back in 2006.
From both conference and workshop it is apparent that the field of cloud and precipitation
physics is thriving with new and young scientists. Apparently the role of aerosols (both
natural and anthropogenic) in cloud formation and precipitation development (amounts
and distribution) in warm and mix phase clouds is one of the most exciting and the one in
which more activity is reported. The processes leading to ice formation in clouds and the
links between aerosols effects on cloud and their effects on precipitation are among the
more challenging areas of research today.
3) New ICCP executives were elected:
Zev Levin, President;
Andrea Flossmann, Vice President;
David Starr, Secretary.
After reviewing a number of proposed sites for the next International Conference
on Cloud and Precipitation, it was decided that it will be held in Cancun, Mexico
in July 2008. Graciella Raga was nominated as the chairperson of the local
organizing committee.
