Principal’s Message
First term is quickly drawing to a close and report cards will soon be going
home. Manor Park continues to be a very busy place. The excellent efforts of
our students are evident throughout our school, whether it is one of our new
banners in the gym or the fabulous projects on display in the hall. Report cards
will be sent home on Monday, December 3rd. This will be followed by the
parent-teacher interviews on the evening of December 6th and the morning of
December 7th. In order to assist you when reviewing your child’s report card

Don’t Forget:
Visiting the school/ Phone calls/ dropping off forgotten items at school:
In order to make the most of our learning time, office staff have been asked not to interrupt
classes for students to pick up lunches or to take phone calls. Please leave a message and it will
be delivered to the student as soon as possible. Lunches dropped off at the main counter will be
delivered to the classrooms by lunch hour. If you need to pick up a child early from school please
make arrangements in advance and the child will be sent to meet you at the front doors. Please
remember to sign in and pick up a pass when you visit the school. Making arrangements for
visits in advance is always preferred to minimize disruptions to learning time.
EQAO NEWS
This year’s EQAO results are in and individual student reports have been sent home. This year’s
results were fairly close to last year’s results. In grade 3 (out of 70 students participating), 37%
received a level 3 or 4 in reading. In writing it was 43 % and in mathematics it was 36%. In
Grade 6 (out of 53 students participating), 38% of the students received a level 3 or 4 in reading.
In writing it was 42% and in math it was 26%. Staff spent most of the November 2nd professional
development day looking at the questions and our results in detail. Examining the results from
EQAO is a very worthwhile process for staff as it helps to determine areas of focus and support.

Anti-Bullying Week
As a follow-up to learning about Remembrance Day and peace initiatives around the world,
Manor Park students will be focusing next week on how to make our school a peaceful and happy
place to be. Schools across Canada and, indeed, the world will be observing Anti-Bullying Week
2007 with its theme "Stand Up! (to Bullying)". Teachers will be building the anti-bullying
message into their daily lessons and a few special events have been planned as well. On Tuesday,
November 20, Sorenbennick Productions from Toronto will bring their anti-bullying message to
Manor Park. Their presentation is called "The Power of One". On Wednesday, Brent Corbeil of
CTV News will deliver his message to our students. Finally, on Friday, our last assembly of the
week will celebrate efforts against bullying by dedicating our Anti-Bullying banner. Students and
Staff will be treated to their own "Are You Smarter Than A Manor Park 5th Grader?" game.
Although this is a special week of activities, we intend to keep addressing this important issue
throughout the year. Our students will continue to work diligently to make our school community
a safe and caring place for all.
Walking Club
Beautiful weather on the 13th
made for a great turnout for
our first meeting of walking
club. Kesha and Katie’s moms
Julie and Sheila along with
Madame Anne got everyone
organized to head out at lunch
hour. Special guest walkers
this week included our Ottawa
University Nursing Students
Emiliem Kaija, and Jackie.
Next weeks guests include
Claire and Tobie our READ
program volunteers. Any one
is welcome to join us every
Tuesday at 11:50.
READ
Two years ago, a special program begin with volunteers Tobie
and Claire. Tobie and Claire are READ or Reading Education
Assistance Dogs volunteers. The READ program improves
children’s reading and communication skills by employing a
powerful method: reading to a dog. But not just any dog.
READ dogs are registered therapy dogs who volunteer with
their owner/handlers as a team going to schools as reading
companions for children. Learning to read is often less about
intellectual limitations than about overcoming fears. Animals
are ideal reading companions because they: help increase
relaxation and lower blood pressure, listen attentively, do not
judge, laugh or criticize, allow children to proceed at their own
pace and are less intimidating than peers. Claire and Tobie
have already been to visit and have begun working with several
students.
Breakfast Club News
The good news is that we now have a Breakfast Club monitor. We welcome
Geoff Baughn to Manor Park. Geoff has been a breakfast monitor at another
school and is looking forward to getting to know his new friends at our
school. Unfortunately, opening day is still a couple of weeks away while we
await hiring procedures to be completed. The children are looking forward to
once again coming together in community to share time together while being
treated to a healthy and delicious breakfast. A note will be sent home to all
families who have indicated an interest in Breakfast Club as soon as
everything is ready to begin.
