Teachers will be building the anti-bullying message into their daily lessons and a few special events have been planned as well. On Tuesday, November 20, Sorenbennick Productions from Toronto will bring their anti-bullying message to Manor Park. Their presentation is called "The Power of One". On Wednesday, Brent Corbeil of CTV News will deliver his message to our students. Finally, on Friday, our last assembly of the week will celebrate efforts against bullying by dedicating our Anti-Bullying banner. Students and Staff will be treated to their own "Are You Smarter Than A Manor Park 5th Grader?" game. Although this is a special week of activities, we intend to keep addressing this important issue throughout the year. Our students will continue to work diligently to make our school community a safe and caring place for all. Walking Club Beautiful weather on the 13th made for a great turnout for our first meeting of walking club. Kesha and Katie’s moms Julie and Sheila along with Madame Anne got everyone organized to head out at lunch hour. Special guest walkers this week included our Ottawa University Nursing Students Emiliem Kaija, and Jackie. Next weeks guests include Claire and Tobie our READ program volunteers. Any one is welcome to join us every Tuesday at 11:50. READ Two years ago, a special program begin with volunteers Tobie and Claire. Tobie and Claire are READ or Reading Education Assistance Dogs volunteers. The READ program improves children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog. But not just any dog. READ dogs are registered therapy dogs who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team going to schools as reading companions for children. Learning to read is often less about intellectual limitations than about overcoming fears. Animals are ideal reading companions because they: help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure, listen attentively, do not judge, laugh or criticize, allow children to proceed at their own pace and are less intimidating than peers. Claire and Tobie have already been to visit and have begun working with several students. Breakfast Club News The good news is that we now have a Breakfast Club monitor. We welcome Geoff Baughn to Manor Park. Geoff has been a breakfast monitor at another school and is looking forward to getting to know his new friends at our school. Unfortunately, opening day is still a couple of weeks away while we await hiring procedures to be completed. The children are looking forward to once again coming together in community to share time together while being treated to a healthy and delicious breakfast. A note will be sent home to all families who have indicated an interest in Breakfast Club as soon as everything is ready to begin.
