JOB DESCRIPTION KITCHEN PORTER REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Kitchen Porter reports directly to the Head Chef and in his absence the duty Chef. PURPOSE To ensure that the fabric of the kitchen and all of its equipment, including everything that is used in the storage, preparation and service of food is maintained to the highest hygienic standards of cleanliness and tidiness. PRINCIPAL TASKS Ensure that all crockery, cutlery and glassware is washed and polished in a timely way to keep abreast service needs. To ensure that all kitchen utensils are cleaned quickly, thoroughly and timely. To maintain the kitchen floors, walls, work surfaces, ovens, extraction canopy, fridges, equipment and utensils to the very highest standard to meet all current health and hygiene regulations ensuring the kitchen is ready to pass any in-house or government body inspections at all times. To assist the chefs in putting deliveries into store and checking against delivery notes. To be part of the team and assist with other duties when required. To be prepared to undertake training as directed by the General Manager. To be aware of hygiene, fire and health and safety policy and procedures. Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and other people who may be affected by what you do or do not do at work. Co-operate with the management of the Dean and Chapter to enable it to comply with any prohibitions and requirements imposed on it by the relevant health and safety legislation. Refrain from interfering with or misusing anything provided by the Dean and Chapter in the interests of health, safety and welfare. As an Employee of the Dean and Chapter to fully endorse, understand and exercise the roles and responsibilities contained within the Dean and Chapter’s Health and Safety policy which is set out in the Staff Handbook. Use all equipment in accordance with your training and instructions and report to your Manager any defects in plant, equipment or premises that could present a risk to health and safety. Carry out any reasonable task that may be required by management. HOURS The Dean and Chapter will offer work if it is available but is under no obligation to do so and the post holder is under no obligation to accept work that is offered. Hours to be worked will be as requested by the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge General Manager / Head Chef, including weekends and possibly bank holidays. The post holder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will depend on operational needs. Kitchen Porter – Casual November 2012 SALARY AND BENEFITS Hourly Rate £ 6.38 per hour, paid monthly on arrears Holiday Statutory holiday entitlement on a pro rata basis. Due to the nature of this casual work and the irregular hours and days worked, holiday entitlement will be calculated quarterly for the quarters ending June, September, December and March based upon average hours worked in the preceding 13 weeks. The calculated holiday entitlement will be from the 1st of the following month at normal hourly rate. There are no other entitlements or benefits. PRE EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Upon appointment a medical questionnaire will be required to be completed to confirm that the applicant is sufficiently fit enough to fulfil the requirements of the position which will include heavy lifting.
