Translation
(Concerning) Kalbaya, son of Nabû-r∂manni––along with 20 oblates
of Ištar-of-Uruk, of those who feed the oxen of the king who are
in the charge of Kalbaya, Šamaš-z∂r-iddin, Innin-z∂r-ibni, and
Iddinaya.
By the 20th day of the 8th month, he will harvest the reeds that
are at the Takkiru canal (on) the estate of Ištar-of-Uruk. He
will carry off the reeds that are harvested and deliver them at
the mouth of the Takkiru canal at the Euphrates, for the works of
the royal palace, to Nabû-a¿-iddin, royal commissioner (and)
overseer of Eanna.
If he does not carry off and deliver them, he will bear a penalty
of Gubaru, satrap of Babylon and Across-the-River.
He must not release the reeds at the Takkiru canal (to anybody
else).

Comment
Connected to construction work at the royal palace (reed layers
are placed between bricks), see Beaulieu, AOAT 330.
Beaulieu deals with construction of the North palace by
Nabuchadnezzor. This text is the 4th year of Cyrus’ reign and
indicates a major building project. YOS 7 168 shows that in year
5 it is probably still going on and needs firewood for brick
making.
Reed is needed for building works. Every fifth layer of bricks
they used bitumen and reed (or ropes) to stabilize the bricks.
Reed also can be used for firewood. No mortar.
Standard deal here. Temple obliged to provide the material, the
sharishari, RC, he is obviously in charge at the place and must
command these people.
Usually action is just delivery. Here there is harvest, carry,
and delivery.
The add on line is also interesting. It is an injuction. It
probably goes to Kabiya.
Bruce and Rachel’s old remarks:
YOS 7 172 narrates that one Kalba, a royal cattle herder, and
three other men are to harvest reeds in the canal of Takkiru on
temple property.1
YOS 7 172 is identical to YOS 7 168 in this regard. Several
texts make no named connection at all. These include TCL 13 135,
TCL 13 150, TCL 13 162, YNER 1 7, and YOS 7 90. As a result, no
clear pattern can be established based on the interests or
participation of the one who is mentioned in the bearing-sin
phrase. Furthermore, no clear pattern can be discerned based on
the nature of the underling, supervisor, or ordered delivery.
The date of these texts also does not establish any pattern.2
Consequently, this aspect of the texts remains a mystery.
