○Have students listen to “The Giant Turnip” in English. Motivate students to work on their presentations
which they will give to the first graders.

2
・The AET should read “The Giant Turnip” in English, call out students names when reading, have the
students say some of the dialog with the AET, and add actions like pulling out the turnip. Decide who the
play will be performed for and which students will play which roles.
○Prepare students to give a lively performance, which expresses the themes of asking for help and
cooperating to accomplish a difficult task, by cooperating in small groups to add expressions and actions to
their performance.
・Divide into groups and prepare to present “The Giant Turnip” in English. Give each group a chance to
present so they can check their progress and see how the other groups have decided to perform.
3
○Motivate students to give a lively performance for the first graders by having them cooperate in small
groups to decide what expressions and actions they want to add the story.
・Present “The Giant Turnip”. Afterward have first graders and third graders comment on the performances.
(7) Important Additional Notes and References to Other Subjects
・The AET or HRT may decide to read any descriptions or narration so the students can focus on the
dialog. Students may ask the AET to help them with expressions for calling their friends to help or
what to say when trying to pull out the turnip.
・You can use books like “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” as
teaching materials.
・To help motivate students and keep their interest, you may want to have students make masks or
other props after the first hour.
